Title: Toyota Aristo/Lexus GS300
Post by: geoffr70 on 18 July 2012, 23:11:00
Hi peeps, thinking about getting one of these beasts, does anyone know anything about them? I know they have the same twin turbo lump from the supra. What are things to look out for/common problems? What's the standard bhp/0-60 time - purely academic (I know they're bloody fast woooooooo).

Thanks peeps

Aristo does in some cases, GS300s don't. Aristos can have either the 2JZ-GTE (Supra) engine or the 2JZ-GE which is very similar but no turbo. 2JZ-GE was the only engine fitted to the GS300. About 215bhp from the GE and 270 odd from the GTE but can't remember the exact figure. Simple easy to do mods will have you knocking on 400bhp with a good engine though. Regular oil changes are good, noisy bearings need to be looked out for with it being a heavy car though. Look out for rust properly on the imported ones. They can rust quite bad and hide it well. Apart from that, pretty damn bulletproof and the engines are steady as a rock. Really good engines. Smooth too.

If you can look out for a MK1 GS300 Sport. Lowered slightly from factory and 18inch wheels as standard. The day after passing my driving test my dad got me to drive his down to where he worked in South Wales (4 hour drive) and I loved the thing. Even in my at the time very very limited experience.

I've just sold a 2006 GS300, nice car with lots of kit. Cramped inside, and a dull drive though, and from certain angles looks like a Toyota (because it is one).

I find all Lexus' cramped inside, had a couple of IS200's as well, they're cramped, and I'm not tall either. The GS I'da say had about the same amount of rear legroom as a 3 series BMW. They're no where near as big as any 5 series I've had, nor as big as the Omega.

A mate had an import Aristo, twin turbo, chipped and tweaked. Frighteningly quick in a straight line, just plain frightening when it saw a bend. Stopping wasn't its strong point either. But the engine was stonking. And tempermental. And very expensive when it needed bits. And a pig to work on. But immense fun when it was working.

Don't like the RX, the LS is a nice car, especially the new one, they just don't feel very special to me, dunno why? They come with an impressive amount of standard kit though, and that goes for all Lexus'. :y.

I had a soarer sc400 a few years back, it was the smoothest engine i have ever owned, you could not tell if the car was running at idle.
very refined.
