Until last year I had been with Tiscali for about 5 years and was happy with their product but wanted to upgrade to 8mg which is when I fell out with them, it took loads of phone calls to a foreign land and the people I spoke to although pleasant didn't have a clue so I asked for my MAC code which should have been provided within 5 days, anyway after 6 weeks Ofcom got involved and my MAC code arrived and I moved to Virgin which was a mistake because there customer service is excellent but the product is poo. So what are your recommendations.

A little more costly than most, but I've been with Zen http://www.zen.co.uk/ for years and they are really very good. Only time I've ever had a problem it's been down to BT and everyone gets the same grief from them.
The connection has always been quick, very, very rarely ever goes down and there's a 20 Gig / month allowance on the MAX product I have rather than any dodgy throttling, etc. That's more than enough bandwidth for me. If you want something you can cane 24 hours a day it might not be for you (having sdaid that, my parents have a Zen connection which my little brother used to abuse horribly, with never a complaint from Zen).

The 2 lines I have here are Zen Internet (which runs the forum, as well as other stuff), and BT Connect for Business, which is work provided.
Both are only as good as the lines they run over, but my lines are some of the best on the estate ::).
The Zen line in particular is very stable - I've had line uptimes of over 400 days (helped as its a legacy product), and always get the full bandwidth that the line suggests (again, helped being a legacy product - uses a different VP on exchange backhaul). It has a 100Gb monthly download limit (Zen don't count uploads like every other ISP), and has proven ideal for my advanced needs. Expensive though.
The BT Connect slows down at peak times - I think this is exchange contention. Has unlimited downloads (suspect a FUP in there somewhere - but I transfer a huge amount of data over it during the day for work).
What do you want to use it for?

Not sure there is such a thing as a 'bad' ISP, just an 'unsuitable' ISP.
My mum, for instance, uses Plusnet. Its ideal for her, as she just does a bit of surfing, banking, email, VoIP (not bad for a pensioner!). Nothing fancy. Works really well for her needs. Would be utterly hopeless for my needs though.

There are ISPs with bad support though. They have customers who have never needed to contact support and ex-customers. It's true that you have to match the product with your needs, and the confusing way in which all these "unlimited*" products are marketed means that can be difficult.

I agree with what you are saying. Also, it depends what sort of support you need (real hand holding, including ensureing your end is working right, or simply just being able to ring the ISP, say the problem appears to be there end, and let them take it from there).

What gets my goat about Virgin is quite regularly its like a dial up, soooooo slooooooow, never used to get it with Tiscali but will not go back to Tiscali because my last phone bill from them came to just over £40 and £27 of that was all the 0870 phone calls to thier foreign chappies about not receiving my MAC code, but they wouldn't reduce the bill >:(

I have just joined o2 Broadband, They Use ADSL2+ so what ever speed you get now should be doubled, I was getting 6meg with BT, I now get 12meg on o2, I believe o2 cannot be beaten on customer service either! They have been fantastic, BT were absolute rubbish!! Cheap too, if you have an o2 mobile its only a tenner a month!!

Avoid Virgin, Talk Talk and BT until the Phorm spyware issue has been resolved, they are all considering intercepting all of your browsing and grabbing keywords and using them for targeted advertising, just great when one login shared over a family, or when online banking.

We have been with Virgin for 3 years now, in all that time i have never had a major issues that has required me to give them a call......
Was with plus net before that, they, like Virgin were excellent, the only reason for moving was because we went to cable services

AOL aren't bad. They are actually quite a good ISP from a connectivity/performance/reliability point of view. They just need to work on their customer service and back end systems...
