If you don't know the service history of the box, the first thing to do would be to do an oil and filter change on it.  Check out the maintenance section for and excellent guide on how to do this.  :y

can that be replaces easy or should I just go for a second hand box?

Going to top up fluid see what happens
What's involved in swapping over to manual is it a big job?

Had similar issues with my old AR25,doing the same between 3 down into 2nd.

After full oil /filter change I was considering going down the route of replacing the solenoids as had a set kindly supplied by a OOF member, but ended up on balance getting a replacement autobox which has been totaly fautless in the 3k it has been fitted.

Assuming you have the facilities to get at the box from underneath with good working access imagine replacing solenoids are quite straight forward in comparison to replacing the box as it is a heavy bit of kit.
