Title: Honda Rebel CMX250
Post by: tunnie on 13 April 2008, 17:11:41
Next month i plan to book a bike test course, from CBT to Test, was thinking of a summer toy, something along the lines of this:

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/bikes/advert+search/Ne-2-4-7-8-27-64-104-133-146,N-13-118/advert.action?R=200814306962375&distance=55&postcode=NN13+6ER&channel=BIKES&make=&model=&min_pr=&max_pr=2000&max_mileage=

I like this shape of bike, as you can tell at 23 i have an different taste in cars / bikes. Often get strange responces / looks when i tell people i drive an Omega!

Not a fan of the sports bike, hunched over type. Much prefer the cruise r type.

Was thinking of the above 250 to get used to biking on, enough poke to  keep up, but nothing scary!

Any thoughts?

Hmm looks like a 1970s/80s learner bike

Read a bit more - bigger version of the CD200 engine - that was around pre Superdream.

Hmm similar power to my first bike a GP100, if you are light it would be OK as a first bike.

I reckon 80mph flat out but buzzy.

This might not be powerful enough - but OK as a first one.

I had a CD200 as a third bike once - sold when I got a GSX250 road worthy.

Yes it was buzzy

You are a dreamer Martin, a GSX250 were definately not buzzy.
I had my Dad's as soon as I pasted my bike test at 17.
I had an RD 125 come past me like I was standing still, so within two weeks of owning it I had swapped it for a 350 YPVS now they were and still are a buzzy bike. ;)

Tunnie.
Have a look at this place they sell loads of motorbikes, plus leathers etc..
I have seen there bikes been used for road testing in the Motor Cycle News.
They have hundrds of bikes in there showroom, maybe worth a ride up and try the different types they have to help you make your decision. :y

Aghhh!

You have misread the CD200 was buzzy it had a 360 degree crank, the GSX250 was 180 deg crank AND balancer shaft and would get to 100 on a long straight.

THe Suzuki TSCC Twins were nice but not that fast - but I did end up with a GSX600.

I had a few GS250Ts nice town bikes but not that quick, however they were cheap due to the learner laws

An extremely GOOD idea bikes are a very good way to travel. And a 250cc is good enough . i,ve travelled 30.000 miles on one no problems
that was on a honda 250 superdream  :y made me a better driver [defensive]and much more aware of others [prats] by the way a 125t honda would rev up to 16.000rpm with new plugs  ;D ;D ;D

Having owned a 4 stroke 250, don't go there!!!!

Seriously, I am about the same build as yourself, had a ZZR250, 15,000rpm to get to the shops.

Have you considered something like a Morini 3½ Strada :-

http://www.motomoriniclub.nl/buy.html

Not the run of the mill, great support club (with a fantastic track day at Cadwell every year), do a lot worse.

Not sure but I had beaten the following off the top of my head

H100
CB100
CB125T
CG125
all scooters
GP125
A100
RS100

Used to keep up with friends Superdreams,  never got beaten by anything under 250cc

RD125 - can't remember seeing any of the twins and I cannot remember if the single was RD125 or RS125

There are plenty around, best looking at the owners club though.  Very, very capable bike, Itialian flair (without complicated electrics which is a plus!) simple to maintain, go very well and handle ( have been lapped a number of times whilst on my KR1)

I used to know a KH250 owner or as it was regularly a KH83.

Had a go on it once as well, but not far.

I gave his pillion a lift when it cut out and had a weird ride back, hitting high 70s with a passenger, in traffic another friend ran into the back of me on a CG125 - they were a nutter!

Anyway after moaning at trying to poke a hole in my top box with their finger we all managed to get back.

The following weekend is when I maxed out the 100 at over 80 genuine, before the timing drifted AGAIN.

I havea soft spot for most 70s and 80s bikes now

Just picked up a few bits of this thread. Seems people are going back a few years, fine but 250cc then was fine, I did many many miles on a superdream. Am I right in thiking that they are governed now? so giving them less power than they used to have. :-/
I may be wrong ofcourse. ;) ;)
Like the style of the bike though. ;D

i ran me own bike business for 10 years so all sorts of stuff past my way, if you like cruisers go for something like a vt600 shadow or xv535 virago as these are low light and have mild mannered vee twin engines in 'em. These would take you every where at a rate that would be comfortable with the ability to maintain motorway traffic , oh and their both better than riding buzzy little 250cc that lack power

Yep, there was even a chopper one, cant remember the make.
A few copy imports do bike style, looking at the moment.
Bought him an off road mini moto last year, based on Honda with a 90cc engine. £199 deliverd, OK I had to build it, been great and it gets well used, gears are strage though you just keep going through them so you have to know where you are. :)

I was an SS50 boy myself, they can both fetch thousands. :o :o :o

Should have added, the reason I was looking is cos youngest stepson is coming up 16 and wants a bike, not a scooter.
Got into trouble cos swmbo not so keen, and there was me visiting the Local Honda shop, not a safe place, I was sooooo tempted, for me not him. ;D ;D ;D

30 year old mopeds fetching silly money :o :o :o :o

i ran me own bike business for 10 years so all sorts of stuff past my way, if you like cruisers go for something like a vt600 shadow or xv535 virago as these are low light and have mild mannered vee twin engines in 'em. These would take you every where at a rate that would be comfortable with the ability to maintain motorway traffic , oh and their both better than riding buzzy little 250cc that lack power
agree entirely  :y......btw the chopper moped was a fantic motor (with a six speed box :y

Years ago when he was a small child he was waiting for the bus with his mum. Along came a scooter and as small children do he shouted out "Look Mum theres a hair dryer going up the road." The bus queue were in stitches.
Wonder who he'd heard calling them hair dryers? ;D ;D

Oh, yes. I remember the "Pifco boys" as we used to call them at school.  ;D

They were absolutely full of it between the ages of 16 and 17 because they had transport (of sorts). Then as soon as the non bikers amongst us got driving licenses the suffered the humiliation of being totally annihilated by the likes of my Mum's crappy Volvo 340 up the hill outside the school. ;D

We used to take the p155 out of them, used to be in swarms when I started on the road.

Riding from a friends bands (drummers dad) farm "Days at the Farm" the LP was called to home was about a mile and I could be overtaking fairycycles all the way.

Ultimate 2 stroke for me was the RG500.....

I was an "Elsie Boy" through and through and decided to try my luck with my 350 YPVS against a two up RG500... The rider looked over his shoulder around his pillion then must have laughed....kicked it down then I just saw the two stroke bellow out of the four exhaust pipes then see you later mate left me there wishing i had one... >:(

Ultimate 4 stroke for me was the GSXR 1100 Slingshot.....

Me and a couple of my mates came across a load of Greaseball Bikers with there Z1000's, which I picked my way through on the way to Matlock. Then I came up against Mr GSXR 1100 at the front with his babe on the back, he shot off like nothing I have ever seen... again I was left there dribbling >:(

I nearly put my front wheel on to a Cosworth Boot when he put his brakes on whilst doing a mega wheelie  ;D
