Title: Wiper mechanism
Post by: feeutfo on 30 July 2012, 08:03:27
... Has two connecting rods in the linkage. Each has a plastic/nylon ball joint socket.

On mine one link rod is worn on the ball joint giving play on the drivers wiper. From experience the dealers will have to order these and they aren't particularly cheap either iirc.

As I have mine apart and will need to assemble it tonight with a new hbv, I was thinking if a minor bodge.

A heat gun on the ball joint in an attempt to shrink the plastic and take out the play. Discuss...

Obviously I'll er on the side if caution as I don't want any nightmares with visibility if it rains.

I've got a spare mechanism if you want to pinch a rod off it?

Thanks Kev. Will bare in mind, but I've ordered a new one. I remembered wrongly as it was only £12 new. Didn't seem too bad. :-\

I put a blob of white grease in each ball cup to keep it working smoothly. If it's only slight play this might even take it out?

Assuming that the plastic of the socket is suitable for heating, I wonder how many attempts it would take to acheive what you're after?

Perhaps something like     http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WINDSCREEN-WIPER-MOTOR-LINKAGE-REPAIR-CLIP-VAUXHALL-OPEL-VECTRA-SIGNUM-OMEGA-/261063851455?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc89e3dbf (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WINDSCREEN-WIPER-MOTOR-LINKAGE-REPAIR-CLIP-VAUXHALL-OPEL-VECTRA-SIGNUM-OMEGA-/261063851455?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cc89e3dbf)  would be worth considering? I've not tried these, but am tempted to buy a couple for the next Galaxy or Punto I see with a detached wiper linkage.

Good idea to keep one of them in the glovebox, after all they never fail when close to home do they ? !! ???

Might take out the play too, going by the way they apply pressure...?
