It looks like I might have to do a few short runs without a back box on the Elite 3.0.
Question is if driven with care (my boy racer days are long gone) how loud will it be on low revs cos I might have to use it to get a few more bits or worse, change the centre sections I have if they are the wrong ones. Apperently they changed the year it was made and so could be either of two types. ::)

if you get pulled over from the noise you will get a big fine. then a fine for not having one fitted. like boy next door did a few weeks back :y

:D BUMMER, but I live way in the country and the bobby's here are few and far between and even then they prefer to just give a warning as long as they do not find a lot.
I will not be having the revs above 1500 anyway, and once up to speed it just a tckover cruise. Thank f its got the power to move on low revs........
Worst case is that I will have to chance it if no-one can give me an idea in db's or relate the noise to something else.
:(

it's loud without exhausts lol, its quiet unloaded though. if you have to do it then make sure you accelerate upto speed quickly then coast as long as possible. i had a blow on both my dp to centre sections after i took the dp's off, it sounds like a WW2 bomber at low to mid revs - quite impressive. i dont mind a bit of volume on throttle but i soon sorted it-it was just too excessive although my exhaust is a bit louder than standard still ;)

All V6 saloon centre boxes are interchangeable ???

;)
Thanx muchly....From the comments I reckon that it will be worth giving it ago just to hear it tick over cos the revs won't get much higher than that anyway cos its a flat road to where I go.
Now curious why they sell a custon made set of pipes that do away with the back box that merely extend those from the centre boxes if the noise level would be so high.
Must admit though that I much prefer to 'whisper' along now that I am and old git ;D ;D ;D

Chuck the old back box in the boot, tie up the ends of the exhausts with a few cable ties. If you get stopped, it just fell off, officer, and I've made it safe. Just limping to Kwik Fitup for a new one, honest, Guv. :y
Noise won't be that bad if the mid sections are sound.

I drove with pipes to back box fully corroded and it wasn't worse than a boy racer noise. What was worse though was when I drove it with no centre sections or back box, now that was loud!

;) On the same page Kevin. Maybe, just maybe it will go without probs. Jusy got the bloody wet weather to give me a break now :-\ and I can get on with it. ::)

Bugger me, now you have me worried again ;). WWII bomber though, now that soands interesting cos one olf fart down the street used to fly them and he is a meddling, nosrey old git of the worst type. Bit of fun with a good old bellow outside his home sounds like fun.....oops sorry occifer just on my way to get it done.;D
Might make a phone tone of it :D
-
Wont be that noisy without a back box.Nothing to worry about imo. ;)
-
:-\ Looking at the sky it looks like today is another wet one.
Might just bang it in for its mot a month early while the exhaust is still intact cos they know me, been going there 20 odd years and will let me put the new pipes on later if it leaks a bit. There again I will have an extra month to get it done. Only had 2 fails in all that time too once for light aim and then for a tail bulb blown.
If this rain don't stop soon the frikkin country will turn into a swimming pool with hose pipe bans ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

;D
Raced the rain and the only problem was a couple of bolts sheared off. Easy fixed, drilled through and new bolt with nuts fitted instead of the usual setbolts.
Tried running it at 1000 then 2000 revs with the back box off before I took the centre boxes off and the increase in noise level was minimal. Still could only barely hear it inside the car at 2000 revs. It was about the same as having an 'upgrade' boy racer go faster big bore tailpipe thingy on.
In fact the next time the back box goes I will do away with it and just fit the extender pipes to the centre boxes that are a lot cheaper.
Now for a beer or two :P

Surprising it didnt wake the whole street :-\ will it pass mot without back box :-\

:y No surprise really EMD cos its the two centre boxes that muffle the noise. The back box only lowers it a bit more and changes the tone. I spoke to the test station yesterday and they consulted their testers manual, even showed me where to read it online and as long as the fumes are released outside of the perimeter of the vehicle, the noise level is below a set limit (in fact its quite a high one anyway) and there are no leaks it will pass the test.
According to that a back box is not compulsory but might be on some vehicles if it affect performance by providing back pressure to the system.
With the back box off mine the only difference was that it changed the tone and hardly raised the niose level at all. I did that purely to see what it would be like for my own information. If I had used thrashing revs it might be a different story but I am not a boy racer type anyway.
At the end of the day if the back box is a lot more expensive than a couple of extender pipes then it might well save someone some money if they do not mind their vehicle being no longer original. Everyone to their own choices but to be safe get it checked by someone with a decibel meter! By the sheer amount of blarting exhausts already used by many of the younger generation and the fact that they get away with it most of the time shows that the police are not that interested anyway. I suppose they only act when some pratt of the boy racer type is causing a regular nuisance and joe public complains. :D
