Title: I've finally relented. Mrs Opti gets a 2009...................
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 01 August 2012, 20:29:52
Mazda. :y

She's finally worn me down with with all this talk about the MX-5, that I've finally admitted defeat and bought her one.

I've paid a £100 non-refundable deposit with a further £6700 to pay within five days.

Why oh why am I so good to the women in my life?. I should be shot for stupidity and a total lack of common sense.

Forgot to say......it is a Mazda but not an MX-5. ;)

Oh dear, what the f**k have I done? :y :y :y :y.

Well Mr EMD....I have to say that she (the car) is a real beauty. She has only 8,663 miles on the clock and is in showroom condition. She has a fully documented service history, too. She is barely three years old and I have paid just 26% of her original list price.

Yep.....you got it.

I know they only do about fifteen to the gallon, and I know they use oil (they're supposed to) but Mrs Opti loved the colour and the way it drove. It's a good looking car, too.

Must admit that it drove like a dream and cornered as if on rails. Very impressive.

It's one of the 40th anniversary models so lots of extra kit.

I suppose I really should has bought her a used Kia Picanto for the same money.........but no one has ever called me sensible. :y

despite general belief rx-8 have a long life wankel engine.. so different than rx-7..  it consumes more oil than you may be used to..

normal for those engines.. and you have to change at every 5K kms..its important..

mazda recommends Dexelia brand for oil..

The anniversary model only came in two colours. Metropolitan mica grey or white ( which I don't like) According to the sills it is number 319 out of a run of 400.

It did feel quick........a lack of torque means you have to rev the balls off it. I've told Mrs Opti not to put diesel in it.......you know how women are. ;D ;D ;D ;)

Even more important is to ensure that it never gets turned off until it has warmed up properly.
They are really prone to flooding, and are absolute sods to get running again. And that's the ones with all the ignition upgrades.

They don't do much for me, aside from the engine 'characteristics' the interior is really cheap. I can't help but wonder how much better a car it would have been with the 3.0l Jag V6 rather than the wankel.

.........and from what I read Cem, a big following. It is certainly a left field choice and just that little bit different. :y

I once owned a Jaguar Mondeo X-Type 3.0 SE auto. Just one problem after another with that one. Mainly electrical. :'( :'(

i went out to more of these then i care too count for the flooding problem, if it ever happens the recomended route back then was pull fuel pump fuse and crank the hell out of it till it fired then quickly reinsert, i couldnt see it doing the cat or starter any good myself but followed the route of mazdas chiefs

We still do.
I no longer mess about; it's connect the jump leads from the truck, pull the fuse and hope for the best. Success rate is about 20%. The car's battery will not have enough power to do the job on it's own. It's not as if pulling the plugs is particularly easy, as that's normally the next step for a flooded engine.

When you add up the Wankel's poor fuel economy, oil consumption, fragility, odd power characteristics, rebuild costs etc, it becomes obvious why nobody else uses them for car engines. Once you free it from the extra stuff required for car use, like the emissions controls and extra belt driven accessories, it does become more sensible for  other uses. Motorbikes and small planes both benefit from it's lightweight, compact size and inherent smoothness yet the downsides are less of a problem.

I think it's a bit of a travesty to make a Wankel engine without forced induction, personally.

But.. put a lardy old V6 in an RX8 and you'd ruin it, imho.

The RX8 is a mass-produced, cheap(ish) 4 seat coupe whose intended market doesn't really suit such a brave powertrain. A 3.0l V6(I suggested Jag as it was also a Ford company and already proven RWD) makes a similar amount of power, but in a manner better suited to that sort of car.

An MX5 with the Wankel strikes me as being a better resolved combination.

I think that you're spot on,  Kevin.

I understand that the RX-8 has a perfect 50/50 F/R weight balance. A weighty V6/V8 shoved up front would spoil that. Like it's sibling, the MX-5, the RX-8 is a great drivers car and it put a huge smile on my face.

Certainly, it's not very quick, I reckon my 2.6 MV6 auto would waste it in a straight line............but it sure was fun to drive.

However, none of this matters to Mrs Opti, she has no interest in power and torque figures, handling and braking statistics. She likes her new car ( she hasn't got it yet ;D) for the same reason her girlfriends love their MX-5.........They like how they look, and they like how their cars make them feel :y

.. and, I'd bet, with a whole load of extra weight, located much higher in the car than the rotary. ;)

I would argue that in a (relatively) light car with 230 BHP, the rotary's power delivery probably suits it well. Put a similarly powered torquey lump in it and you'll get the same basic performance but delivered in such a way that it'll be a lot easier to put it in a ditch.

I've always fancied building myself an RX-5. :y

Let's face it, without the rotary engine, it wouldn't be an RX-anything, it'd be a "Mazda 8" or similar.. The R standing for Rotary (allegedly).

There were rumours of an RX-5 before the RX-8 debuted, that would have made for an interesting car indeed  :y
