Title: Elite Wheels
Post by: Sam Burton on 01 August 2012, 23:11:49
As the title suggests has anyone run 225 40 R17's on the early Elite wheels ?

Why? Just fit 235/45s  ::)

Running this size of tyre will make your rolling radius too small.  This will throw your speedo out.  :y

Standard 17"s will also on that car as they have a smaller rolling radius than the 16"s it came with :y

Not to mention any insurance or handling issues caused by running such an odd size :-\ just because the stud pattern is the same doesn't make it right :-X

Early Elites had 16" rims, some fitting any 17" tyre is gonna need an awful lot of expanding foam ;)

Thats because early Elite alloys are 16's  ::)

Think you guys are getting the wrong end of the stick here...

When Sam says 'early elite' he means the early facelift elite 17's that he's recently fitted to his 2.2 dti GLS.  There are lots of pictures of this around the forum.

I wasn't trying to stick my nose in with my post Sam, merely warning you about the speedo inaccuracy in case you hadn't factored that in.   :y

I'd stick with the correct size TBH

Not quite.  Late elite wheels are the six spoke ones, so 'early facelift' is probably a good description for them.  :y

Or 'middle aged elite' if you prefer.  :P

Elite ran on 16" from 1994 to 1999, and 17" from 2000 to 2003. So first 6 years on 16" and last 4 years on 17". Thus 'Early Elite' can never be described as anything other than 16"  :-\.

Late could easily cover the last 4 years, in same that early can cover first 4 years.

Thats why I think Model Year is helpful. Not that I get excited enough about alloy wheels to know the difference between them all.

Quite.

I know there are a few 'train spotters' on here when it comes to alloys. I'm not one of them.  I couldn't even tell you what my MV6's wheels came off...

Not trainspotters TB, just people with a good knowledge of them, in much the same way as you have knowledge of other elements of Omega's.  :y

I'll stand corrected then my 2003 GLS is running on 5 Spoke 2001 Elite wheels they are currently on 225 45 R17 but just curious if anyone has tried a 40 profile tyre ?

The correct size is 235/45/17, thats what I'd stick to. 225/40 is going to be awfully low profile for it. Is it on standard suspension, or lowered/stiffened?

They should Al, but I believe this was the size of tyre that was already fitted to the wheels when Sam bought them 2nd hand.  :y

That won't help TB I'm afraid Al.  He's not an alloy wheel trainspotter and will need you to specify the model year.  ;)

For all that it matters, and just for the record it really doesn't ::), yours are dished with a pronounced rim, where as the Elite ones are flat faced :P

p.s. if the cap fits... :-X

I remember when 165 was considered 'Wide'...... :D :D :D

I upgraded my Avenger to wide, low profile 175/70 x13 on 5.5" wheels a fortnight after I got it. It has far more grip than you can actually use as a result. Stock is 145x13 on a 4.5" wheel, so it's quite a big step.

Once I eventually get the XE running I expect to have to upgrade again. I have some 15 and 16" Revolutions that look great, but I suspect will spoil it. In which case, the credit card will get hammered for some repro 6" Aleycats and good(rather than the old, cheap tyres on it at the moment) 185/70x13s. I found that's the wheel and tyre size I like best on Capris(had various setups on the 10 I've owned), and should work well on this, whilst still looking right on the car.
