Safe or unsafe :-\ :-\
I like the comment "since all accidents are caused by human error" ::) ::)

In reply to "Is it safe to text & drive at the same time" I guess yes, but you're not strictly driving ;D :y

Just remember a computer is only as good as the person who programmed it :o
Not sure this will actually happen. I really can't see Volvo accepting liability for any unforseen computer controlled upsets. Twenty years ago GM were developing cars with clip on wings and pushing them as the imminent future ::) the first and last time I saw one was in the Epcot Centre...
-
was'nt it the volvo that had collision detect and on it's unveiling to the press ploughed into a wall??
-
Google already have a licence allowing them to use self driving cars on the public roads in California with no human intervention...

Mercedes, but apparently the ejit had forgotton to turn the system on ::) which is kind of my point. No manufacturer is going to accept full responsibility for the actions of the person driving/passengers/anyone nearby etc...

Great! a car that
harvests information from people's private wireless LANs while it drives itself. :D
"Over my dead body" is what I think of it. :y
-
Set it up with a Facebook account and it'll crash itself in no time :y

Mercedes and Volvo both had it happen. I for one wouldn't be confident using a car which is driven by a computer, yes it may well know the roads, what about road works though? I've only just stopped covering the brakes when you use Cruise Control which follows a car at a set distance, still makes me nervous ;D.
-
Del, what happens if, when using active cruise on a motorway, you collect a plastic bag on the front bumper :-\
Does the computer go 'opps' and slam the brakes on, or does it 'see' through it :-\ Can't say that I'd be too happy about following a car with that system active either way :-\

Never had it happen to be honest, it is good though, and very clever, if someone pulls in front of you it slows you down until you return to the set distance again. I'm always alert though should something go wrong. I know BMW's have one large sensor, and then two other sensors mounted elsewhere.

Make something idiot proof, and along comes a better idiot. Technology like this just hastens the evolution of the idiot. ::)
How long before drivers start using this as a cruise control, or at least a "backup driver" to pay attention when they are playing with their gayphone on the motorway?
rather big spikes protruding from the steering wheel. That's what we need. A touch of Darwin. :y
-
Not for me. Im a control freak who hates even being a passenger so for a computer to be driving, well, let's just say I'd be buying a lot more underpants :-[

Does this mean I can drive to the pub and get as pissed as I like with no possible chance of any repercussion?

That depends on how competent a driver the programmer is :-\ you might find yourself doing 20mph everywhere ::) try and drive in the dark/rain/fog, and the car might not even start...
-
The future : jump into a car , click and set destination , fall asleep and wake up at set destination simples ::)...no hand controls just one big bed with a 40 inch tv in place of the windscreen :-X

Wait a minute.. I'm warming to this idea. :D
