I hate all these kinds of places, Minga, Dull House etc. They do prey on people that are struggling & then they struggle just that bit more.

There's one up town & I'd love to chuck a brick through its window & every new pain after that >:( >:( >:( >:(

I wouldn't give them tihs on a stick :y

To be fair, if your struggling will life really end if you dont have the 47" 3D tv and get one off freecycle until times are better. I have an old CRT off freecycle and I can watch the same programs as most people  ::)

you do have a fair point pete BUT with an APR of just under 30% they really are making money out of the people that really need shops like brighthouse...these types of shops should be shut down >:(

I'd never even heard of Brighthouse, or the other places mentioned, until I read this thread.  :-\

I assume they are all places that offer stuff to people with a poor credit rating, at extortionate APR rates?

£900 is the cheapest I can find that particular set - more like £1100 in high street stores.. still, that place is well known to cater for people who absolutely must have the latest and greatest, but can't afford it and can't get credit anywhere else (probably because they're always buying the latest greatest and got themselves a few CCJs along the way)..

There's no such thing. If the person in question saved the £12 week they are paying for the 47" all singing all dancing tv for 6 months and made do with a freebe off freecycle they would be able to buy a cheap LED tv from Argos, Tesco ect and be debt free and not struggling as much.

Don't get me wrong, I was one of the people that had to have the latest gadgets until I lost my well paid job and split with my wife just over 12 months ago, now i'm renting a house and freecycle is weekly read, I get by and have no need/want to visit Brighthouse or other places.

Bloody hell, i'm an angel ;D ;D

Pete. Some people just don't think like that, some just have to have :(

.. and nobody's stopping them from considering whether paying a grand over the odds to "have now" as opposed to "after saving up" is worth it. ::)

Yes, these shops prey on such people, but, I don't see any deception there, it's obvious that you are paying an insane amount for the credit. :-\

Indeed, no one needs a shop like that. The APR are set like that for a reason, its because they are very risky to the lender! Wonder how many people stop paying and legal proceedings then start?

Save up and buy it, or just do with a cheapo CRT. Use an old computer for streaming iPlayer and such, loads of options out there to try and save up. Or just do without!  ::)

I love gadets, I want to get a new bicycle to cycle to work, some proper kit as well, but I'm looking at second hand examples on Gumtree, which are half the price of brand new bikes, even with ride to work scheme. There are always cheaper options...

Did you notice the optional service cover charge which is over £600 for 3 years  :'(.

I bought a TV from Richers a year or so back and upgraded the warranty to 5 years for about £35.

Yeah.......Like when you're desperate for a few quid. Some loan company (shark) will lend you a few bob at an interest rate of 5,000%. Parasites. >:(

Cheapest I could find it for was                  £898.00
so split by same ammount of weeks           156           weeks
would be                                                   £5.76       a week if you could get interest free

Those robbing gits have allready made £396.97 before the finance (plus proffits from buying direct from the manufacturer)

Cost us £50 for our 5 year warranty, but we can claim that back if we don't make any warranty claims in the remaining 2 months it has left to run.

Dull house as i call them cause they are dull they are for poeple who can't get cerdit from any where and thats why they opened there shops and there rates are 49.9% which is a rip off i would never go to dull house and would rather save the money for what i want even if it took me a yr or so

If you miss a payment at dullhouse they send the heavies to your door and lift it , must cost them a fair bit each week employing them  :(

Sadly, most folks believe the boll*cks that the heavy's come out with and let them in instead of telling them to pish off

I don't have a massive problem with companies like this.

There's a demand, Brighthouse or whoever make nice money out of it, the slender-witted get to watch their mahooosive tellies now rather than later. Keeps them off the roads a bit.  :y

I wouldn't personally want to be in that line of business, but it's up to the public to 'not want' their services, not for me to say they shouldn't be available.

Tbh, these companys are just filling a gap in the market.
Its called "supply and demand".
All they are doing is supplying the goods that some folks would have bought on a credit card before the markets went tits up and the banks started calling in the dept's.

The real scumbags in this sort of field is companys like Cash Convertors  >:(
This has got to be one of the biggest outlets for stolen goods going  >:(
Nowdays, the little scrotes tend to nick what they can, stash it for a few months till the heat has died down then its down to Cash Convertors where the very minimum of checks are carried out and they can make some nice risk free money  >:( >:(

I think its quite straightforward. These companies wouldn't exist if no one used them. And judging by their success and advertising profile, it would seem they have a significant following. Else they would be out of buisness.

In the OP's in law's case; it seems straightforward. Its his choice to make an informed decision. I suspect brighthouse did not force him to buy anything. He must have walked into their showroom with an intent to browse/buy. And he still had a choice to say no to being fleeced. Yet he chose not to. Adults can make their own decision, just like some choose to smoke knowing fully well that they are paying into an investment fund for cancer.

I was bought up with the ideal that borrowing money was shameful and it wasnt something that should be done unless there was absolutely no other alternative. I still stick to it. For me no TV or a much smaller TV or one off gumtree/freecycle would suffice. But not everyone thinks alike, and thats what these companies make a living off.

Whats that i heard if they manage to get a foot in the door they have a right to enter  :-\ wouldnt get past me  >:( maybe the laws have changed now . Never bought from sh.tehouse never will .... we sometimes have a look in the window when passing but only to see what apr they are getting away with ... then there is the companies that install those pay per view meters on tv's still a £1 a go :o....you have a choice and one i would never choose  :)
