Hi all, i took my mv6 out for a run to blow the cob webs off since ive not done it since i got it 2 weeks ago. It seems on a run of normal speed (30-40 cough cough) all is fine apart from tracking ::) but take it on m-way and b road after 5mins the ABS and TC light comes on and doesnt go of till you turn the engine off. Any ideas?

Looks like your ABS ecu has died... :'(
Have a search through the forum as it's a common problem and has been well covered, but the good news is that it can be fixed relatively cheaply. In short your options are:-
1) Buy a shiny new one from your friendly Vx dealer, but very expensive!!! I think about £900 fitted when I enquired a few years ago! :o
2) Get a second hand one from a breakers. This bit I'm not entirely sure about, but I think if you get one from an identical car you can pop it straight in, otherwise it has to be reset with the Tech2 kit... :-\
3) Get yours fixed. There's a company in Kent called BBA Reman that you can send it to. I did this and it was a good service, but the car is off the road for a few days. :(
Good Luck!! :y

I would second Tiggers diagnosis. There are a few things you can try before going down the route of changing the ABS ECU. Cleaning sensors and rear light bulbs. Have a search through the maintenance guides. In my experience you end up having to bite the bullet.
The ECU is fiddly to remove and does require patience and a selection of tools. I found it helpful to hold the screws in the tool with a piece of sticky tape for example. Anyway that is all described in the guide.
I have replaced several over the years with secondhand units off similar cars ( e.g. 2.5 elite auto) with success however one failed after a year and another failed after only a month. I guess they are all getting fragile around that age.
Another place you could try is an outfit called ECU testing in Nottingham. As with BBA Reman. You send your duff unit in and they fix it( I recall it is a very very delicate wire they re solder) test it and send it back to you quite quickly with a guarantee. Cost - from memory about £130. I recommend getting yoursd repaired.
Tracking problem- wishbone maybe

Does the speedo stop working when the ABS/TC lights come on ?

If it doesn't now it probably will do.
Also you will lose some powersteering asistance.

Probably. :y..............although its possibly a wheel speed sensor.I had similar symptoms when one of my rear sensors packed up.
Would need a good suitable reader to confirm.

Agreed,I would certainly be checking codes before ripping out Abs Ecu :y

I do have a tracking issue but the person i got the car off had 215/40/17 on front and also wrong way round and 235/45/17 on the back. So its off on in tuesday for new rubbers. As for the speedo and power steering ive had no issues with either the only thing i do get is when i dip the clutch to change gear the revs dont drop they pickup then drop.

Grannon
some good pointers here before setting to and replacing the ECU.
I would suggest you also have a read of the guides on things like taking your car to WIM (wheels in motion) for a proper wheel alignment set up. It will cost but not as much as getting through a set of front tyres in next to no time following "tracking" done by a local tyrefitter.
If there is an inherent problem with the front suspension e.g. failed wishbone (a consumable on Omegas) then no amount of setting up tracking will compensate. Have a read about front suspension, wishbones in the guides

Odd that the warning lights don't come on until you pick up some speed :-\ maybe it is complaining about the difference in diameter between front and rear tyres?
Given that you are going to change them anyway I would reserve judgment until you have a full set of equal sized tyres.

Yeah im changing the rubbers as i have a slow punture in one so needs doing anyway then see what its like. If it was an ecu failure would it not be on all the time?
-
You anywhere near spring bank west mate ?
I've got my laptop on the car at the moment.
If you want to pop round, i'll read your codes for you and have a look :y

Not necessarily. When mine went it was intermittent at first. :-\ As everyone else has said check everything else before ripping out the ABS ecu!! ;) However if your speedo dies then I'd say it's a dead cert! :'(

Sorry only just seen this as im on nights, I live on longhill so not too far really

Given the symptoms, if a local code reader is available, I'd like to see codes and live data before condemming the ECU.

as said here I would get the same size tyres on first before even thinking anything else.

Its funny how a set of rubbers change things. They have sort the idel problem then drive and tracking. im not out of town till monday so wont be able to test fully but i took it 70 and all seems fine but it was only a quick blast
