Title: Member Map
Post by: TheBoy on 12 August 2012, 10:21:09
We are looking at a more integrated Member Map, and have a test system running.

Please note, this is a test system, entirely seperate from the live system, and is purely to test the map.

The tab to show the map is Member Map (just to the right of the old zeemap link), and you add/edit your location from your profile. Note, this data will be wiped in a few days.

Test site at

What he said ^

brings up
"It works!

This is the default web page for this server.

The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet."

Yeah, then look at the tab as described in first post - "Member Map".

Add/Edit your location from your profile.

Hope that makes sense.

The link is to a 2 week old copy of OOF, modified to support this new map :)

Like the new map, obiously those added thier names are the active forum users so makes it more up to date.  Is there any chance the map could have an option to be made bigger or even full screen?  :y

Regards the poll.  Why not leave both map options, one then shows any members that have joined, the new map therefore becomes more uptodate with new members (and old)(if they choose to add them selves of course)

As far as I can make out, it needs to be a specified size...

Having both is my least preferred option, speaking personally.  I think its likely to cause too much confusion.

I like the new map. One thing I always wondered though, wouldnt it be better to have it on the main page as a sticky? I think more people would add locations, help members where possible, and it would be very handy to see who was nearby, without the need for passwords. As a recent thread showed, a few members were requesting the password, so clearly hadn't used the map.
I'm sure there are good reasons as to why it is the way it is that I know nothing of, these are just my thoughts

Yep, prefer newer, a lot cleaner looking and easier to use, also feels more part of OOF, rather than zooming you off to another site with ads.

Chris.

On gay pad. Doesn't really work. Zoom via gestures is mental, Map fires off to odd locations, although it responds ver quickly. On a couple of occasions it buggered of the other side of the planet while trying too zoom in onto my location.
Eventually selected by entering the location in the box. All fine, except the pin is placed a coupe of miles from where it said the location was.

I like the member list though, over the old one. Saves tapping on everyone to find a specific member.

Also the pages are very slow to load. Presume not relevant to testing the map though?

So which way do I vote? It's probably better than the old one on windows for most people and more advanced
But useless for me on safari. :(

Its using the Google Map API, thus probably designed *NOT* to work with crApple devices ;D

Doesn't work too well with webOS - can only zoom in or out, can't pan.

Gayboy - you will have more joy using the zoom buttons on bottom left, rather than pinching.

yes Dad. But the +/- zoom buttons aren't on the map when accessed from your profile, or the link under the map(?did I see?) :-\

Use a proper computer :P

Just tried on iphone, enter town, road then select from dropdown.  Harder, I imagine on a 3GS like mine, due to smaller screen.

That said, I purposely have put my pin in wrong place, for privacy.

When I say "But" like its an important point, I realise it's not important at all. ESP as I have probably only ever used the map 3 times ever.

But you did ask. ;)

As most will only enter a single pin once, to my mind, actually viewing the map is more important to be usable. IMHO.

When I go to my profile to add my pin, I can see the section relating to the member map, but alongside it is just a box to enter text in.  No map or search box.  Am I being a plumb?  :-\

Edit: Or is it just because I'm running a very old version of IE?

I doubt IE6 would work (not got IE6 anywhere here to test). IE7 should I would have thought.

Tried to add my location (IE9) by following the instructions (quite a few times) given but it would not work!
Tried to use the area in my profile but the map simply would not open to search for my location and the search function, when told to use it, only brought up posts that contained the word leicester.
At this time not very impressed with the new map even though it appears to be a better one simply because I could not add my location.
Motto must therefore be 'if it is not broke don't fix it'.
Someone please explain just how this new map is supposed to work ;)
If many members are having difficulty by not having an early version of IE (6,7,8 etc) then surely it is time that OOF caught up and upgraded their version to IE9 which I am told does have the facility to be backward compatible with previous versions of IE?

This test site has now been switched off.

Thanks for to all those who tested it.

It seems the majority think this is a better option than the current Zeemaps one we use currently.  Those leaving suggesting it isn't, can you comment why?  :)

Thanks again.
