My problem is that the engine is running ok but it seems to be very hot, when you get out the heat comes from under the car! the temp guage is not working and i am concerned that the prevoius owner has disabled it to hide this fault! The engine pressurises the coolant very much as well. The enine Cooling fan cuts in and out apparrently normally and sometimes runs on for a while after stopping. As stated the engine runs well apart from this disconcerting problem, yes im thinking head gaskets here, which will render the car scrap, costwise ! sometimes i get a small fluid leak from under the n/s/f bumper but its not often? ive flushed the rad and system with redflush but what came out was pretty clean . any ideas ????

It`s a pressurised system.

Unlikely

Check the rad drain plug isn't leaking and all the connections to the rad are tight , constant flushing and reverse flushing did nothing with mine till i found out it was a blocked rad . Replaced rad and all is well :)
Also check coolant cap rubber seal for wear , coolant bottle cap and bottle for cracks .
;)

All sounds completely normal bar the gauge not working and the leak. :y

My mv6 runs nicely at 80c and lots of heat under the car as normal

All sounds completely normal bar the ... leak. :y
Any chance it could just be normal condensation from the a/c system?

The residual heat in these engines is quite impressive, even after a short run :y

I did have a similar leak on mine and it was at the rad drain plug. I was flushing regularly after replacing a failed oil cooler. The red drain plug is designed so as not to fall out when released although I was able to remove mine with minimal effort. In my case, the front one of the two sealing washers was damaged, it looked as though it had been trapped in the screw thread and was distorted, failing to seal. I switched the two sealing washers and replaced the plug, no futher leaks. May be the same with yours or you may have some grit/sediment on/around the seal/sealing point?

Just as an add on to the initial post, I just got a OBD2 reader that gives 'live' sensor readings and today, a warmish afternoon, the coolant temp was showing (on the reader) from 75c at a low throttle 30mph going up to 91c in a traffic jam ? The cooling fan comes on and goes off at what seems like normal regularity. does this sound normal ??? also as I am currently running on water only would this make the car run hotter or cooler than with the recommended 50/50 antifreeze mix? thoughts please !!

Normally further back not under nsf bumper as op stated. Possibly rad drain plug.

Definetly get some anti freeze in there asap ;)
Not only does it act as anti freeze / summer coolent, it also lubricates the thermostat and water pump :y
As dbug says, check the drain plug on the bottom end of the radiator.

Once again, thanks for the info/ confirmations It's put my mind (what's left of it) at rest !

Actualy, the most important property of antifreeze is the corrosion inhibitors!, all of which helps protect the head, rad, oil cooler, head gaskets etc.
As for pressursied, its supposed to be.
Temps you are seeing are fine.
Aircon condensate drains are either side of the transmission tunnel so water from these would be further back.
Heat is as expected, two large hot cats and a transmission tunnel to duct warm air under the car result in this sort of effect.
