...Britons on organizing the Olympic Games :y It was huge achievement you can be really proud of it. Just reading some statistics in connection with the Games and thought of writing this brief post. :) :) It was especially interesting that how many soldier was getting ready to do their job if needed...Some of my friends have been to London nobody talked about missiles and army presence though. Perhaps everybody were invisible... :)
-
Soldiers werent invisible, but they were very friendly, yet appeared very professional regarding security matters at the same time.
It was nice to see how many people spoke to them just to say "hello",or"thankyou" etc. rather than just treat them as part of the furniture. :y

After the Beijing closing ceramany, I'll be honest, I was skeptical. And the coverage of the build-up was an embarrassment.
But, I am happy, no, proud, to be proved wrong.
I went out to the pub on the night of the opening, and it was whilst supping a beer, I decided to set the recorder to record. Missed first couple of minutes. Glad I did. The closing 'party' I thought was a bit naff, the atmosphere didn't come over. The games themselves, amazing.
The only poor part, IMHO, was the free-to-air coverage, which I thought was quite poor.
-
I was extremely sceptical prior to, but during and after, what a wonderfully brilliant event. So much positivity and good will. I suppose we should be questioning our mind set as a "country" when we have just proved we can do so much, and do it so well.
Any situation can be viewed In a positive or negative light. The Olympics has proved a positive attitude can be the difference between success and failure.
Inspirational figures are hard to find. I'd like to meet the leading members of the IOC, and see how they go about thier business.
Although the real driving force was us. The public and the support they gave to the establishment and competitors, allowing the whole thing to evolve so well.
Team GB. :y
-
I was not only sceptical, bordering on cynical, but also completely disinterested in the whole thing. That changed when I went on Weds. I found myself, surprisingly, caught up in the atmosphere and became shockingly enthusiastic. ::) ;D
I thought the opening ceremony was crap tbh.Havent seen the closing ceremony on TV yet,so dont know how it came across, but I was in the stadium last night and despite most of the music not being the type of stuff I would usually listen to,it was an astonishing show, and the atmosphere in the stadium was incredible.
To some extent we have (hopefully) reminded ourselves that we Brits are as capable as anyone of doing things on a very large scale if we put our minds to it.It would be nice to think that it will generate confidence and showcase the UK to the world, but I suppose only time will tell on that one.
-
If I were to nitpick though...... Spice girls.Sounded like several cats being strangled at the same time.Footage of John Lennon singing "Imagine theres no countries" hardly apt for the biggest event in the world in which countries gather together in a competitive but friendly atmosphere. ::) Im biased though,I always thought Lennon and his "iconic" song were vastly over rated tbh. ;D
Ray Davies singing Waterloo Sunset was a highlight for me (hes a truely great English songwriter) and having wanted to see The Who live from about 1974,I finally got the chance.
I would imagine there was enough old classic cars on display to make Guy go weak at the knees. :)

It was truly a great event. It didnt disrupt travelling into London to much either
Top event, well worth the money spent

:y As a fuly paid up cynic of the London games i have to admit it was a brilliant achievement, a huge well done to all concerned, just goes to show there is some life left in the old country after all ! not to mention the fact that the French will have been left seething over the success of the games! :y

Worth every penny just for that one thing. :y :y ;D

Fantastic achievement all around, about time the right people got the recognition they deserve. Instead of people "getting famous" on shite like Big Brother.
Only down side was the ticketing, they got that wrong. Way to many seats empty throughout the games, although it did appear to get better.
Organisation was top notch though, imagine the planning that went into the opening and closing ceremonies? May not be to everyone taste, but they pulled it off. For me it only really got going when FatBoy Slim started.
Great hall of medals too, found myself glued to the TV for the rowing and cycling :)
Travelling into Central London yesterday, main tourist bits full of Olympic athletes, really great atmosphere everywhere.
And oh yeh, we denied the French of getting them for at least 25 years? Got to smile at that :)

Also if you were Sky or Virgin Cable customer, the coverage was outstanding. 24 dedicated channels in HD, showing every sport live. Brilliant stuff.
Although will admit the freeview stuff in the evening was a bit rushed and overall a bit poor, way too much of Clare Balding! I know the BBC is a bit cash strapped, but we could have had a lot less of her and more Helen Skelton! :-*
Huge cockup on the mountain bike coverage for the mens race, completely missed fact Fontana lost his saddle in the closing stages!
But other than that, excellent, some of the camera work in the pool and outside broadcasts such as pan down on rocky sections of mountain bikes was outstanding!

It was the BBC One coverage for Joe Public (ie, in the evening - the majority still work during the day) that was really bad IMHO. Its BBC's premier channel, and all it was were the usual has-beens (Linekar, Balding etc) talking about it, when they could have filled the channel with not only live events, but highlights throughout the day. Instead, it seemed be 2 mins of a sport, followed by 28 mins of analysing it. I have no interest in what the presenter's view is about a sport they know sod all about. Very poor.
BBC Three was better.

They were freesat channels, so no need for Sky or Virgin.

yea if my infos are correct the budget of the games was double than Hungary's one year state budget... :o The most surprise of mine was Brasil - Mexico football match where finally Mexico won...but back to the budget I'm sure of money not everything as most of you tell about "atmosphere" , "proudness" and other different abstract/theoretic notions. We also candidated for the games because of not only financial benefit but with intention of making rise the national proudness a bit, which was quite low at the time of candidation. Also the radio is saying right now that what a huge benefit will be realised by GB's economy as not only the power of the country was shown up but the individual's as well and the mental condition of person how closely relates to the achievement of economy... :y

Other way to look at it, its a 2 week advertisement for London. The marathon through central London, took in all the key sights and looked amazing.
Also my sources tell me if you take away the cost of the buildings, the games made a considerable operating profit.
-
Fantastic opening event, fantastic games, fantastic TV coverage and fantastic closing ceremony. I could make suggestions for improvements but they would only be minor except empty seats.
Saw something about funding for athletes and thought it was great value for money. A mere £127 million. The extra take up of sport (and therefore improved standard of health ) will save millions on future NHS bills.
The whole closing ceremony was on Spanish TV this morning while I waited for car air con to be regassed. Spain did poorly in the medal tables.
-
BBC coverage was poor reguarding highlights and the use of the extra Olympic channels for live coverage only. As mentioned what good is that when your at work?
I can't see why the extra channels couldn't repeat the coverage of the assigned event continually until the next live event started.
For example BMX was never ever shown in the highlights afaict. Shooting only got a brief mention in the evening as we got a medal.
But that's down to the BBC. Nout to do with the Olympics as such.

Not sure about the finacial implications, as history shows that the hosting city suffers from lower consumer spending after the games, and that seems to be the case here with retailers around the venue.
Although, in the UK as a whole, it seems that consumers have disappeared since the Jubilee celebrations. Not sure if thats due to Jubilee and Olympics, or just the realisation/confirmation that the UK is in the worse double dip recession in living memory (something any consumer facing business has been saying for about 18 months, but the 'official' figures have only just caught up). One of the more shocking figures is Amazon reporting a 90% drop in profits - Amazon are supposed to be one of the success stories, and supposedly unaffected by the young generation's lethargy in going out shopping.

Some years before in the times of plenty; the Gods of Olympia had bestowed their great games upon Londinium and charged the people with the task of creating a games at which the peoples and athletes of other lands could come, watch and compete in a peaceful spirit of equality, friendship and fun. :)
In the years to come the Gods saw a great depression fall upon the peoples of Londinium and the lands around, and the people were dismayed, discouraged and fearful :'( The Money Lenders were seen as the cause of the troubles and were hoarding their coins, but The Priests wrung their hands and looked away while the land was stalked by the spectre of floods, famine and pestilence. :-\ Despite a celebration for The Queen of the Great Britons, after forty days and forty nights of rain, the people forgot or didn't care for the games of the Olympic Gods. :(
However when the time came the people held a ceremony which nobody understood, but nobody cared as they danced, laughed, had fun and forgot their troubles. :) The Gods saw this, smiled and the sun shone across the land and the people were happy, and flocked to the coliseum to see the athletes compete. 8) They saw triumph, tragedy, blood, sweat and tears and came away with much admiration for those great athletes and rejoiced in the glory and spirit of the Olympic Games!! :y
At the end of the Olympiad the people held a great party in the coliseum at which singers, dancers, fools and jesters entertained and the Gods decided they could do no more for the people of Londinium and it's great lands, and looked away to The Land of Diminishing Forests where the next games would be held.....
and now it's bloody pissing down again!!!! :D :D :D ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D
Hope you all enjoyed The Games folks 'cos I certainly did!! :y :y :y Looking forward to The Paralympics now!! :y :y :y

Btw, is it usual to have all amouncements pre ceded by a French translation?
-

French is first language of games, all games have been like this.
-
My opinion only....
Good bits........the events :y Hotels getting caught out after having hiked prices into 'silly land', and in some cases, having to drop the prices per room, by £600 !!!!!!!!! :y
Bad bits.........Expense, Coe in total denial about empty seats, terrible rambling commentary, especially during Mo Farrows ten thousand ( Mrs T, 'pro' olympics got well arsey and turned the sound off ), the incessant hype trying to justify it, despite an empty London etc ( lad had to go to London on business for a few days, and said London is dead.) :-\
Opening and closing ceremony's :-\
-
Oh Terbs, come come. :)
-
Sorry Chris....I totally forgot to add the weather in the Best bits ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Better ;)
-
Honestly Chris....if it had just been about the events, which I enjoyed immensly, I would be a happy bunny. :y
But it was all the attempted brainwashing before, during , and now after, that does my head in.
We are now being told that all the kids in the land are going to rush off to the gym, and take up all sports ever invented. 'My ar$e'. They may go to the gym, buts only to get fit enough to outrun the police ;)
I bet you that in a month, or lets say after the Para's, it will all be forgotten, white elephants will appear (remember the Dome).
Whenever Wimbledon is on, all the kids in the street appear with tennis racquets for a fortnight, then swapped for footballs for the season, then out come Cricket bats. Been like that since I was a kid :y

Missed out on tickets, but had to do a taxi service to Stansted this evening and look what I saw: :D :o

Ok, call it brain washing or whatever, better that way than down trodden and misserable. Best of luck to them. Aye. :)

Worked it out myself: Women's 10m Platform Diving Silver medallist Brittany Broben :y

I must admit, it's given me a renewed interest in sport, and getting fit.
I've just enroled as a member of the local tiddly winks club.
-
For my two penneth, I thought the games were a triumph, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the sports the highs and the lows ( with the exception of you know what), suffering withdrawl now ;D ;D
A lesson on how to put on a show, and we got nearly as many medals as the rest of the EU put together ;D ;D :y :y
Referendum NOW

We'll expect to see you having moved on to the men's discus by 2016, then. ;D

I thought the games were a great success, even if the expected "spending" of the masses in London didn't happen.
I am, however, disgusted that the dedicated Olympics channels have disappeared already and that the Paralympics aren't going to be getting the same coverage. Let's hope that channel 4 do us proud with decent coverage.
In this modern day of "Including Everyone", wouldn't it have been a real Olympic "Legacy" if the Paralympians were given the same recognition? ::)
-

Indeed.
Why couldn't their events have been integrated into the main games so they could share the atmosphere?
-
Speaking of the Paralympics - I saw something this morning stating that wheelchair users can only be accompanied by one other person; so if you are in a wheelchair and have a wife/husband and kids, you get to sit on your own.. at the Paralympics.
Ah, inclusive! ;D
