Title: c20let in miggy
Post by: mrgreen on 16 August 2012, 08:11:33
I am thinking of doing the conversion as I have a desmond at the moment and my wifes polo is faster (not as comfy ofcourse!) and have been researching what needs changing, from what i can gather it will sit on the same mounts although one mount may need adjusting to accept the turbo pipe as it sits low, gearbox wise it will bolt up but does anyone know whether my box from the 2.2 petrol will handle the increase in power and my box has a long reach gear shifter!! hardly race spec! is there anything that can be done to shorten the shift so to speak,  i've read that you can't run Aircon with this motor in there can anyone verify this as aircon is something i like to have, my biggest stumbling block would be wiring it in which is the part I really have no idea about, Radiators and intercoolers shouldn't be a problem they sit under the bumper along with the air intake i believe, if anyone has researched this as well and can shed any light it would be much appreciated,
thanks,

Rich.

It has been done before... Just not sure where I've read about it :-\

I think there might be some information in the Gallery

Torque is the main killer of gearboxes when you do engine swaps, is it a manual or auto ?

If you can find a way to mount the aircon compressor on the engine you can keep the air con. The C20 is a very similar engine so you might find it will just bolt back on. Otherwise, just make up a bracket.

It's certainly been done before so have a search on this site and you'll find some pictures at least.

o.k R28!!
i've done a bit of research on this matter and it seems all the boxes are marked R25-R28 irrespective of the inards, just for info the way to tell them apart is by the alpha code which is the first two letters on the gearbox here's a table

Alphacode
20SE, X20SE, X20XEV R25 Variante 1 JJ, GJ
Y22XE R25 Variante 1 GK
Z22XE, X20DTH R25 Variante 2 HA
X25XE, Y26SE R25 Variante 1 JL, GK
X30XE R28 JM, GL
Y32SE, Y22DTH R30 HP
25DT, X25DT R25 Variante 2 JP
Y25DT R30 EG

so that's what my search will involve looking for a box with JM/GL/HP/or EG Alphacode, if anyone has one PM me!!

now another problem i've been thinking about is my 2.2 petrol is drive by wire, does anyone know if the let's are drive by wire or will this invole a new peddle and a wire?

thanks,
Rich.

R25 is reckoned to be pretty much as strong as the R28 in practice. R28 just has shot peened internals so I wouldn't regard it as necessary to swap them, TBH. See how you get on with the R25.
