Title: PAS Fluid Change
Post by: Webby the Bear on 21 August 2012, 13:04:23
Hey dudes,

I got an MOT coming up and I'd like to give the old girl a full service. I have mentioned changing the PAS fluid before and I think it was RobG kindly helped. However I found this vid.... this is exactly wht I'm going to do except I believe I should have the front on axel stands when turning ze wheel. would you mind just confirming that what i'm thinking is correct :)

1.3Ltr`s max. If you don`t want to jack the front up and keep turning the steering wheel.
1) Empty the PAS header tank
2) Remove the uppermost  pipe (return) and place the end into a container
3) Fill the reservoir with fresh fluid
4) Run the engine
5) Keep topping up the with fresh fluid until the old fluid is replaced (check the colour)

Cheers rob but i got no problem with jacking/standing the front of the car  :y

can i just clarify that this is the return pipe (my pic below) and the process would be:

1.) empty PAS resevoir
2.) remove pipe (pictured) and empty as much in to bowl as poss.
3.) jack up, put on axel stands
4.) start car
5.) turn wheel full right to full left a couple of times to get as much out as poss.
6.) refit pipe
7.) put new fluid in and continue to turn wheel left to right until at the right level

cheers mate  :y

That`s the pipe Steve. As said, due to steering being a recirculating system you can just let engine idle without jacking

How often are you supposed to change the pas fluid ?

I'd be suprised if my shed has ever had it changed  :-\

As long as its to DEX II spec then it will be fine. :y

Most Motor Factors sell although some have reported that Carlube Oils are poorer quality than GM or similar...but its power steering and any brand will be ok...better new fluid than old as steering will feel smoother. :y

It's not as if PAS fluid has a hard life. It's just being pumped round and round at pretty low pressure most of the time.
