Going looking at a late 53 plate Frontera, 3.2 v6 with all the toys. Only 1 prev owner full history & 42k. Not having ever had one, are they as bad as suggested? What should I be lookin for?
Got the 4x4 bug and want a change.
-
i know they are'nt too good off road...a range rover / disco they ain't..... :y
-
no good off road? i had heard it was the other way round :-\ :-\ :-\ Not bad off road, but on road manners were a bit rough?
-
If by having the "4x4 bug" you mean you fancy some proper off roading, then you don't want a Frontera as it isn't anywhere near capable IMHO.
If you want a capable 4x4 that has all the toys, drives like a car, and can actually go off road in the true sense then start looking at jap import Isuzu's/Mitsubishi's.
If you are prepared to forego a few toys, then go for a Disco.

You took the words out of my mouth, make sure you get a 2.7 Merc engine, more power full and more economical than the 2.8 or 3.0l........ :y :y :y
I used my local independent and it only cost me £200 for full service, inc oil, air and fuel filters and an MOT, so not over expensive as it is Mercedes engine and auto gearbox and very comfortable....corners like a boat if you push it...... :D :D
-
from what i have seen much better than a rangie imo.. :y

frontera is known as the most off road off roader due to breaking down all time, had lot of diff and axle problems, also that yr and engine size tax is going to be expensive, ive got a toyota surf, import model, 5yrs of trouble free motoring and still holding its price, pulls like a train too
-
Tax = same price as an omega £270 / year
-
my mig is a 3.0 and only £220 a yr
-
If you look on VXON the Frontera's seem prone to a lot if not more faults than the Omega, but the same as the Omega they grow on you ;D

If it was registered after March 2001 then it would be £270 :y

The Disco 2 in ES trim has most of the toys as well,or at least mine does :y

Frontera is poor offroad, and pretty tedious on road. Awful vehicle, and mostly naff engines.
Obviously, for real off road, the original remains the best - a Defender. Or a Disco if you want some comfort ;D. Discos are fairly well equipped for their age (ie, buy a 20yr old one, you'll be lucky to get a CD player). For top level comfort, but still retaining top tier offroad capability, Range Rover. Range Rovers from BL and BMW era rust. Range Rovers from Ford era break. Range Rovers from Tata era seem much better built.

You need a Lada Niva, if you can find one ::) ;)

Jeep cherokee 4.0ltr inline 6 power.
go anywhere too..I know i've tried it and still grinning. ;D other than that a defender 90, a bit rough and ready but almost unbreakable. ;)

Frontera total waste of metal stay well clear.
I'm running a 300 tdi disco at the moment and had it in some funny places and never been stuck (yet pmsl). The disco is prone to tin worm but easy to work on.
I can get 37mpg out of mine if driver like an old fart (60 on m-way).
Another great we offroader is the suzuki jimny seen these used a fair bit on the pheasant shooting.
We had a race up a steep muddy hill in January this year with a selection of 4x4's (disco's 1,2,3,4 rangies x3, jimnys x4, defenders x2 and a fiat panda 4x4 )and the panda won everyone else kept sliding

Totally agree with hoofing it....Disco's are the best offroaders out there.. I`ve got a 300tdi now as well and to be honest i wouldnt swop it for the world it just goes on and on...And if the impossible happens and i win the lotto, i think a complete restoration would be in order for the old girl....... :y
