Good luck with your MOT. Be confident --it'll pass .

Have a bit of an issue with a local MOT garage here. SWMBO's Vectra went in -- passed - but garage said both tail lights were out and needed bulbs.  "we've put them in for you Madam" +  £12 charge.

Daughters Micra went in - passed - BUT - "both front side lights were out Miss - we've put two bulbs in for you "   + £12 charge

Brother took his Toyota van yesterday -- Went to pick it up at 4-30 - yes you guessed it 2 rear bulbs out and another £12 on top of MOT

I didn't check brothers van , but I know that all lights were working on both SWMBO's and daughters cars. I know because I flippin' well checked them myself.

Might have to look into this little scam a bit more I think ! >:( >:( >:(

A few years ago I put a Carlton in for MOT and waited in the viewing area watching what was going on, more out of interest than anything else. When told it had failed because a rear light was out, I expressed surprise because I had checked them as OK on arriving at the MOT station, and asked to see the problem. All lights were working, and I knew they hadn't had the chance to replace any. The boss's embarassment was a joy to behold, and he started to slag off the tester in front of me, but I reckon it was a regular con. to extract a little more profit from the operation, from those who are too trusting.
I've had the same thing happen with windscreen wipers, but must confess that I didn't mind renewing these for what it cost.
I came out of that center with a pass certificate, two new rear bulbs FOC, and a totally new scepticism about garage owners' integrity.

Sounds like quite a nice little earner... Even if they had gone, a bulb costs no more than a pound. £10 for a couple of minutes work is not a bad return!

I may be wrong but I didn't think a garage could do any work without permission! Just you of interest, what do they charge for the test? Is it the full DoT rate or discounted?

A local motor bike shop fitted new pads for me twice at MOT time without asking & charged me for the privilege. They just quoted safety at me. I let it go the first time but the 2nd time I put them right. It's them who's lost further trade
