When people drive from the south do you get off at Kendal or drive further north & get off M6 at Penrith?
It's longer distance but I think it would be quicker?
Thinking of camping here in an couple of weeks:

Penrith is MUCH quicker, a route we do quite often.
roads much smaller, windier, caravan / tourer filled, and generally a PIA.
Motorway as much as poss, then A66 (j40 from memory). Job done.

Agree with Jimbob much quicker :y

66 all day long.

Yep, unless you want a sightseeing mimble the A66 is the best bet. :y
-
Thanks chaps, thought Penrith would be quicker :) :y

Depends on time/date.
Outside of holiday season and rush hour, I find the scenic route quicker. Any other time, M6 and A66

Going Sept 10th or 11th I think

Also depends whether you're in the car or on the bike ;)

Penrith is far quicker, but the route over Dunmail Raise and north is much more fun. Just watch some of the sweeping bends, I was chasing an XJ6 through there in my old Scirocco, years ago, got quite scary, them big Jags can go some.

My Mum lives up there. They say that it ALWAYS takes exactly 30 minutes to get to Penrith along the a66 from Embelton. Always.
Other traffic always dictates your pace, true enough. But the average is always the same.

Aye ... not so long ago the A66 was my route on the blackbird every month even through winter with a sheet of ice forming on leather jacket ... luckily i had heated grips so never felt a thing ;D :y
