Just discovered the front number plate is missing from my Wife's Corsa. There is no sign of broken plastic bolts, so it looks like some lowlife has unscrewed it. How do we stop this trash ?

Easy....555 timer, power Mosfet and a LOPT.....

Report it, cos someone is gonna fill up with petrol with your wifes plate fitted to their car. :(

Nice one, and a camera to take pics as their hair stands on end. What do you recon 50KV ?.
Talking numbers I saw a Mondeo the other day with the reg 746KW. Wishful thinking !

Takes me back to my childhood days of charging up capacitors on a 500 volt Megger and then giving them to my little brothers to play with.

similar to my schooldays --- standing in brothel creepers ( well insulated), one hand firmly clamped in the dome of a Van Der Graff generator, getting nicely charged .... then pointing my finger at the back of some freshers neck waiting for the spark and scream! ;D

Aprentice sparkys used to do that then drop em in the gents urinals at a certain local tech college. :o :o

We used to do a three man team on meggers.....
One on one clip, one on the other and the third on the windy slip clutch ( no push button crap back then) when, on the word of command, all worked in sync upon the unsuspecting targets bare neck whilst crouched over the desk....
Oh, how we laughed!! ;D

Ken - report it to the Police. The number may end up being used on a clone or petrol drive off..... :y

Call Police ASAP

I said that before all the violent members posted. :o :o :o

Thanks Guys, will do tomorrow.
My WKD side prefers Mark DTM's solution.......................... ;D ;D

sorry i have to say who ever took it [i think kids for a gokert] is not very smart 1 as they will have no use with just the 1 plate they wil need the back, and if they can copy a plate, what about a pen?? so i say kids or very very dum adult ;D

Not for petrol, camera only take front plate. :)

ISTR the next step up from that was trying to make a Jacob's ladder with a big old paper in oil capacitor charged up by a line output transformer. Luckily we tried it round my mate's house and his parents kept finding digital clocks around the house that were stuck displaying 88:88 or other nonsense. ::)

No, the next step up is a tesla coil....easily made if you have a handy supply of brake pipe ::)
I should of course have said to use a power transistor capable of with standing 800+V and not a power Mosfet in this application..... :y

Have seen a couple of impressive demos but never got round to making one. Apparently to form the secondary you need a short length of 8" polyester Gas main (the yellow stuff you sometimes see offcuts of by the side of the road..) ::) Ahem. So I'm told.
Brake line or microbore pipe for the primary as you say, and a neon sign transformer, some tank caps and a spark gap.

Ahh, yes. Good old BU208..
I must admit I'm ashamed that I never thought of this:

Jacob's ladder with added hairspray!

I`ve built a couple of HVTesla coils....`not solid state though; using a surplus overhead-line tranny and homemade Caps.....however, the spark-gap causes just a 'tad' too much interference locally :-[ so can only run`once in a blue moon....`heaps of fun though! ;)
An enjoyable hour may be had browsing here:

When you say "overhead line transformer" you don't mean what I think you mean, do you? :o

Kevin
;) If you mean steel-cased/oil-filled, 46Kv./230v and (ahem!) 'surplus to local utility-requirements'....then yes!
One has to be VERY careful of course! ;D
-
Makes my suggestion of a neon sign transformer look a bit inadequate. :-[
You must be able to run one serious tesla coil from one of those. :o

Oh Yes! ::) .....`streamers up to 3-4 ft.! :y
`though I must confess to frightening myself with it at times....`ripping the air apart makes a heck of a lot of noise. :o
I`d play with it more, but the interference issue is problematic....I try to run it for the local-village show in August; `pleases the crowds! ;D

I once worked with a chap who's trick was to hold on to a plug lead of a running engine then touch whoever walked past him on the back of the leg, he said he found the resultant scream and leap very gratifying.

actually.... are you sure she didnt just prang it and lose the number plate??? ;D

Sounds like a very effective electric counter measures device.....the resulting RF must send receivers within a few miles pretty wappy!

Voltage sources used for spark experiments tend use extremely high voltages - keep a respectful distance. Also, capacitors which store a lot of energy make sparks brighter and louder, but are also quite deadly. Make sure they are fully discharged before touching them. Bleeder resistors are recommended. :exclamation
wise words ;D

Reminds me of the time I had to go out to a incident at a night club where some bright spark (see what I did there :p )
Used a Taser stun gun against a 7ft long metal urnial...
I tried to keep a stright face honest.
