I could never make up my mind if these buggers where mad, stupid or brave.

Proper hero's imho  :)

We had a chief tech armourer called Ken Saw out in sausage land during the late 80's that used to scare the shit out of everybody on exercises  :'(

His favorite was the delayed booby trap.

You would think you had found something naughty under a table then somebodys chair in the next room would go bang courtesy of mr thunderflash and a nice time delay fuse  :'( :'( :'(

The word was he would have been certified and kicked out years before if he wasn't so good at his job

Yep. Me too. The job gets a lot worse than the NI bits they described and I wouldn't be surprised if you need to be on the brink of sanity to get through each day, to be honest. :(

my brother in law still does this at 52. He left forces about 12 years ago and has been doing private stuff in mine/ordnance clearance since and in lots of difficult countries. Not outwardly mad but cannot settle to an ordinary job.
