Title: Poxy Warning Light
Post by: robnobrakes on 06 September 2012, 14:14:45
Our Omega MV6 3.2 is running perfectly, but the engine warning light (emissions) decided to come on yesterday, out of the blue.  Car still runs perfectly so what can it be?

Any suggestions greatfully received :y

Have you checked for codes?

Do the pedal trick test... See maintenance guide on forum...

Don't be surprised if you get code 0420 or 0430.  :y

Did it and got 10 flashes followed by 4 flashes, 3 flashes and 10 flashes - end.  What does that mean?

So how long will the failing cats go on for before they need to be replaced?

Dunno but I've got the same problem with my 3.2,seems like it's catching.

It's the pre-cats that it's complaining about and the emissions will be fine ;) The only real solution is to move the sensors but in the short term a cheap EML re-setter will get rid of the pesky light ;)

Incidentally, I have an 0420 come up since I started driving a little more gently but no EML (yet) :-X

I'll be giving it a decent thrashing soon to see if my theory is right and that eliminates it ;)

Never replace the cats.

In this case, move 2 sensors to new places on exhaust. Needs £15 of parts, and bung a local firm a few quid to weld in.

Still no e.m.l. on on my 2.6, decent fuel and a good thrash should see you right... :y

For some reason it seems that only 3,2 suffer this problem, have not yet seen any 2,6 to have 0430... Any ideas why? the cat set-up is the same in both...

My 2.6 did have the cat codes showing when I first got it, also seen lot's of 2.6 Vectra's with the same codes...

The starting cats (pre cats) are borderline. The 3.2 gives them a harder time than the 2.6, thus you see 0420/0430 earlier on 3.2...

Around 20 minutes after writing the above post I jumped in my car, started her up, and watched as the engine light did'nt go out.
430 and 420 codes revealed via pedal trick...

After a good thrashing, the light has extinguished itself 8)  I've also filled the tank with BP Ultimate (after the disappearance of the light).

Drove 200 miles today and the light has stayed off :)

Sod's law, Mate. ;)
tbh I've stopped putting 'super' unleaded in it, seems a waste if I'm gonna scrap her.
