My front right spring lets out a metallic "pop" sound as I turn the wheel ... also sometimes when going over speed bumps etc .... not of course the clunking you get with buggered wishbones ... listened very carefully definitely the spring making the noise ....anyone know what might be wrong?
-
Sounds like the coil is broken, possibly.
-
Thats what I thought and might explain the strange pulling going on ... could it have become unseated ????
-
If its always in the same place, check top strut bearing as well

If the spring is complete that's where I would be looking too :y
-
What does the top strut bearing do and is it hard to get at?
Does it mean a new strut?

it contains a bearing that allows your strut to swivel when you apply steering lock, problem is the bearings gets water and mud in it which makes it start to stick so when steering lock is applied you get a clonk as it lets go and starts to move :y
the top mount is a seperate part which is replaceable, not sure if the actual bearing is available on its own though :-\
-
That sounds like my problem ... So if I replace the top mount two questions how much is a new one including bearing Approx and do I need to do them in pairs?
-
Just seen the mounts Approx £30 and the bearing about the same on ebay..... would non oem be ok for this area or should it be OEM?

How was the spring diagnosed? If drivers side check the steering box bolts the chassis are tight. :)
-
I held the spring while someone turned the wheel and the noise and vibrations were definately from the spring but I will also check the steering bolts... as for the pulling and tyre wear I think I am over due for new wishbones.... but I would like to get all the right bits at one time
-
If spring broken it should be visually obvious ;)
-
Any creek or knock in the steering or suspension and the spring will amplify and vibrate.
If the spring is broken it might be the culprit but it's more likely something else is sticking the giving elsewhere. If you can feel a knock at the steering wheel it's reverberating through the whole system.

I am going to replace the wishbones anyway (Lemforder????) so I will remove everything then ... I assume I will need spring compressors??

Aye you will need them to do the top mount :y
-
Unless its lowered, yes compressors needed. Grease inspect top mount barings etc :y
-
If I get a new top mount does anyone know if it comes with the bearing or not?
-
Here is what the top bearing looks like, although not suggesting you buy from here as quality is unknown

Worth a pm to Andyc on here for price on genuine :y

I'd strongly suggest checking steering box bolts are tight before doing anything.
Mark discovered the box bolts where creaking on AA's car. Except the creak sounded like a knock. But only after checking the top mounts which where fine in his case.
It sounded for all the world like it was coming from the top shock mount area.

Thanks for th advic eI will do that ... where is the steering box?
-
In the engine bay on the end of the steering column. But the bolts are accessed from the drivers wheel arch. The nuts are accessed from under neith between box and engine. Remove heat shield nuts and hold the Box nuts with a spanner if the bolts spin.
