Auction does not say, but if it has Optical on the back, go via that into the TV. Then what ever the TV does, Xbox/DVD/TV you get the sound

Agreed. In addition, the TV normally delays the sound to compensate for any delay in processing the video so you don't have to mess about getting the lip sync right. :y
Might have to configure the TV to output surround sound rather than stereo, though.

This is all assuming that the TV has a Surround Sound Decoder and outputs ;)
If not then you'll need some form of decoder/processor/amplifier to get full 5.1 Surround ;)
-
Sorry if i sound like a tit but ive got a play station 3 how would i wire it into that.
-
As I said above, if you go Optical into the TV from your sound system. You don't connect it to PS3 directly ;)
What ever input the TV is on, it will output (assuming TV has the capability) via Optical to your sound system

ok thanks Tunnie ill go and pick it up and have a play with it. So should all the other speakers wire into one and then run an Optical cable into the tv?
-
Basically, yup. No experience of one you bought, but at a guess all the speakers wire into the sub unit. From that sub unit, you go either into a decoder or the TV.
Worth downloading the manual for that unit you bought, also check the specs on your TV. Look for Optical output :y

Ahh. Assumed it was an active set of speakers, but it appears not to be, so it'll be no use without a 5.1 amp with digital input from TV.
-
so i may need an amp then?

so i may need an amp then?
yes, certainly. The DVD player it was originally bundled with had an internal amp. :(
-
ok thanks for that are they interchangable say if i buy a dvd player with and amp will any make and model do. and then i assume i can then run an optical cable into the tv. Or as tunnie said could i run it into the ps3 then again to the tv.
-
Its a surround sound speaker system adn hence requires an amp to decode and drive them

When you buy an optical cable remember to remove the plastic protector bulbs from the end of the cable. For some reason on the packaging they negate to mention that and the cable wont fit in the socket no matter how hard you push ::)
