Title: Replacing balljoint boots.
Post by: albitz on 13 September 2012, 14:14:01
Got a couple split (inner end of both tierods),have replacement boots to fit,but cant get the bloody things on. Or to be more exact I can get them on without the retaining springclip, but cant work out how to fit that.
Anyone done it,I assume theres some knack, technique or maybe a tool ?  :-\
A minor job I know, but proving to be a pita at the moment. :(

Numerous ways. Put the clip on the boot then fit the boot, with a twist on action like your screwing on a bottle top. Or fit the boot then work the clip on from one end while working it on a bit at a time. Bit like a key ring. Ah, are you one of these people that bites their nails?

The keyring method works well with a slender flat head screwdriver :y

Take your time though, quite easy to skewer either your hand or the new gaiter ::)  :-X

Probably trying to work out how to dial 999 with a screwdriver through one hand and the other holding some bog roll over the hole to stem the bleeding ::)

If it's easier, I don't see why you couldn't use thin cable ties :-\ presumably the idea is simply that the boots are secure and dirt/moisture proof :y

Deja Vu was just trying exactly that about an hour ago, wasted more time trying to put it on than it took to remove the part. Decided just to opt for the easy option. CABLE TIE.
