Title: Are you happy with your Omega?
Post by: SMD on 17 September 2012, 18:40:31

When I bought mine, it needed a few little things doing to get it to a stage I was happy with. Once these were done I was happy and felt car was 'complete' for a month then the original GM exhaust needing replacing which I replaced with a noisy Walker unit (without researching) and replaced brakes with squealy TC pads. I lived with all this for over a year and recently replaced everything that I was unhappy with and thought that would be it but now it needs wishbones, WIM setup, tyres and has started to rust. All this would cost around £600  :(

So I give up, keeping a second hand car tip top is not possible  >:(

What does yours need to be 'perfect'?

I had quite a bit to do to mine when i bought it but i knew that as paid peanuts for it , as for a 15 year old car its not doing too bad but its an ongoing erm project  ::) it will never be as good as twigletts although i wish it was  :y Ongoing bodywork needs doing  :)

Second hand cars will always need things doing over time, I knew the history of my car from the last 4 years due to my father owning it and it was well looked after, however I have spent a small fortune sorting things out that arise, I may not be keeping the car for a hell of a lot longer but I know the money and time I put into it is worth it as it is a car I want and I like to keep a car up to standard, before this I had a Vectra b SRi V6 that I paid £600 for, I had the car for a little over a year and spent in excess of £2000 on it just doing bits and pieces I wasn't happy with or just needed doing, how much time and money you are willing to put into the car is all down to personal preference but if you want a good car that is up to your standards its just one of them things you have to do.

its a fact which I also need to accept..  it never stops , one after another.. if I kept that money I could buy a fleet of omegas (in UK) to fill the tesco car park >:( >:(

New or 2nd hand, all will need something at certain ages/miles.

Bodywork aside, I'm perfectly happy with my 1998 MV6, bar a rear bush issue that I need to look at. The 2003 Elite should have some decent rubber on in a week or so, then that should need little doing for a while.

Im pretty happy with mine tbh.MOT runs  out tonight, its booked in for Friday and Im hopefull it will pass. Need to rework the front end of the LPG setup and fit a new stat.
Also going to fit ccr2006 with boser amp speakers etc and rear blind in the near future, then rear parking sensors, which I think will complete the upgrades.
I think the main reason Im happy with it is that I have upgraded almost everything from CD spec to elite spec over the last 18 months,so it really feels like its my car as I have done so much to it. It also reasonably economical thanks to the LPG.
I also dont rack up too many miles on it these  days as I have another runabout car that gives the equivalent of around 75mpg - and its a 1.7 Vauxhall. :)

It seem like I'm always working on mine, but the reality is that it does about 1000 miles or so every week, so every 2 or 3 months I'm having to change bits that you lot might only do once a year :-\

It owes me nothing, is fast, capacious and comfortable :y

If I don't keep it it will be simply because I've replaced it with a tidier low mileage one :y

I gave my 2003 Omega to my mum. As a result I have to drive a 2009 Astra. There is nothing wrong with either car. But when it comes to drivng I know which car I would rather be driving  :y

Should be fairly trivial to do the necessary rewiring, if you have access to wiring diagrams.

Note, however, as there are a lot more configurations available for later type, its unlikely you'll come across one with the right config :(

I'm very happy with my Omega, although I'm always fiddling with little bits to keep it spot on...

The way the car is now, is down to a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears over the last 2 years, but I can honestly say it's all been worth it.  When she's all polished up, she really does look the part, and she drives very well too.   :y

had a run up to my mums at week end ,i had forgotten how much she gets looked at and how she clears the outside lane i think some still think its a cop car or slow to see what it is or try and catch me. crossing from m1 to a1 on an empty road shes so smooth at *35 mph was only making 18 mpg lol still averaging 26.2 on a run and she just walked through another mot. got a couple of spots under door mirrors, steinmetz grill could do with shot blast and repaint and one wheel has abit of crazeing in paint but she polishes up well for 13 years old.

I originally chose to use an Omega as it suited it's purpose as my work/family car.

With the help of this site and all you lovely people I now self maintain and repair (just done HG) the car. I know there are other cars that this would apply to but they are not mig's

Another (important) factor is that over the last 10 years, including buying, LPGing and maintaining the 3 mig's I have owned, but excluding the ongoing costs (tax, ins, fuel, etc) I have averaged about £1500 a year or £125 a month. AND 60% of that I can expense against my business  8)

Cheap, and luxurious, motoring IMO

Very , I've had it nearly 10 years now .
Like Albs I've steadily changed and added to it fettling it as time past to get it just right. I did a 150 mile trip to Cork and back last night and driving out over the mountains as the sun set made me realise how capable ,comfortable and still attractive it is. I'm only doing about 2 to 3 K miles a year in it but to replace it with say a Volvo V 70 or an E39 touring would be a considerable cost ( and risk over here  ::) ) for absolutley no advantage .
Not really any more to do to it now other than maintain and enjoy .
It'll be here for a while yet......... :y

I've had mine 5 years, done 50,000 miles, bought it from a family member before hand. Spent £1000's on paint work. keeping it immaculate, maintaining it and its still not were I would like it. Has a tiny cat scratch on the bonnet and some markings were the front mud flap has scratched the base of the drivers door. Need my Oxy sensors moving, once them 3 jobs are done, it will be truly immaculate with everything working or unmarked..... Probably spent £7k in five years easy (excluding £2k on 19" snowflakes and rubber), probably worth £1700 max. But I never ever skimp on anything, just spent £650 on 4 new Goodyear eagle F1's for example. Just how I like my cars to be, so my preference, but would be happy to sell it with no worries, not that I'm thinking that.

Just a few photos, must have 300 easy on my PC...... Look at her every morning and after 5 years, still makes me smile... Spends her life traveling Europe and in 50,000 miles never missed a beat....
Needs some loving from Elite Pete soon  :y  :y

cat scratches not a big problem.. soapy water , 2000 sand paper.. very slowly and not much force.. stop after every 10-15 moves, dry and check the laquer depth..  then g3 is your friend (dont make the area wide)..  same principle applies to every scratch.. but if you can see the depth with bare eyes, you cant remove it completely unless your painter applied 10-12 layers of laquer which is very very rare..

Brikhead/Albitz, Cheers guys. I never thought green was my colour, always had silver previously...
Cem, done everything possible to remove it, using detailers and specialists, The scratch has gone right through, however hardly noticeable now. Only way to get rid now is a bonnet respray.
Really fancy these now, love the colour but think the missus would go mad  ;D  ;D

Got  mine to tow the caravan when my Mondeo gave up the ghost with over 200k on the clock.

I never got around to fitting a towbar and then sold the caravan.

Now the Mig is only for going out with the family. Not a supermarket 'get your tesco value door ding's for nothing' trolley. I have a van for work and the wife has her own little run around.

Lovely, quiet, fast and good looking car, I fell in love with it. Being a hot rodder, I can't help personalizing my cars. So, the mig has joined my stable of projects. It ain't no hot rod. But it will be a classic one day and I hope I can get it to a standard to go on a show field one day instead of accompanying my other show cars to the camping areas.

I do most work myself to keep costs down and this forum is an alladins cave to help me do just that.

I suppose when it comes to cost, it boils down to how much the car means to you and your own value on keeping it alive.

ok.. mask the area with bands with a sensitive work.. where band lines follow exactly the edges of scratch.. this part is critically important so, spend as much as necessary time.. then with your exact color code (trusting your sun doesnt fade your color) spray a very tiny 2 layers on it..  wait few hrs.. sand only the excess that overflow the edges.. than with same method (mask again) spray 2 layers of laquer .. then sand and polish :y

I simply love driving my Omega, but...

I have the dreaded valve-stem leak problem and the puff of blue smoke at start up really annoys me. I've been thinking about having it done but it's a hassle as the best mechanics on here live miles away and I'll be without the car for a good week or more. :(

Plus, I have the dreaded 2/3 sticky solenoid problem on the auto box which occasionally rears its ugly head. Had no problems over the summer but has turned up again twice in the last week. >:(

Apart from that...I still love it..and it's only done 46k from new.  :y

Happy with both of mine (the 2.2 LPG & 3.2 Elite)

2.2 still appears to ride better though! Popped new exhaust (£90) and drop links (£30) on the 3.2 during the week, that job at a garage would have cost a lot more.

I was at scrappy yesterday for a bit of fun, the cars are often left with all paperwork inside. Saw one invoice from a garage from 2 years ago, for an MOT, service of oil and filter change and air filter.

£185  :o

I could do that DIY for less than half that, most of the cost being MOT.

I'd love a Supercharged XJ soon, but Omegas are so cheap to run, nothing will match it.

Yeah I love my Omega, but I have to hold my hands up and admit, instead of staying on top of things apart from servicing, the car quite literally backs me into corner, before I do anything. eg jump starting with the van :'( now new Bocsh 4 battery, crappy chav sports exhaust, replaced with Eternal system and after a 100 mile round trip today on M25,wandering all over the shop :o inside edges of front tyres SHOT :-[ again my fault put off front suspension rebuild for too long, but even with above headaches shes still quiet, smooth and quick :y

When  I bought mine it was not far off needing a new front tyre[so I've replaced that]another ccr2006 as the one fitted wouldn't eject the cd cartridge[been replaced]and needed the cam cover gaskets replacing[done]now needs new screen as it's cracking on nearside, then I can take it for M.O.T.But as it's a 2000 F/L 3.0 elite and I've had 6 months running out of it for a purchase price of only £400 I can't really complain[still prefer Senator B though!]But take heart the number of new cars I see coming into where I work for problems[sometimes serious]to be sorted is frightening!

Agreed, my Seat Altea, which I bought new, was recovered 3 times in two years...piece of shyte >:(

My ex plod Omega has by comparison, only been recovered twice, once for clutch failure, and once because I buried it into the back of a lorry on the M6,(would have driven it home if I hadn't mashed the radiator :-X).

VWs are poo, their only aim is to screw you for as much cash as possible at each service >:( why else would you have to dismantle the front of the car to change the cambelt, four pot Audis, or have to remove the engine to change the timing gear, 3.0 V6 diesel. It wouldn't be so bad if the cars were a sensible price to begin with...

Smd yours is in very good nic. Any omega owner needs to factor in wishbone and set up costs. And let's face it those tyres should have been changed long ago really, so your ahead there. ;)

Any car will incur costs and need work. New cars are thrown together with little attention to set up from new, newer cars cost more to buy in the first place, so yours is a bargain and needs little work, as only the wishbones and set up are a real issue.

Rust is unfortunate, but much better than the inferior pre face lift. ;D ;)

I'm perfectly happy with my 1998 MV6, bar a rear bush issue that I need to look at.
Spoke too soon. Develooped a horrible creak from front suspension/steering. Bugger.

The only issue, which is disturbing me and assumedly won't be solved soon a little idle problem on LPG mode that caused by an age-old mixer system is fitted. Nowadays I'm about on finding a proper sequential kit and thinking of fitting some extra instruments that are missed sometimes eg fuel pressure gauge. Possibly mine is oldest iron here that is still running. Must admit I had - and I'll have of course - some problem with Miggy but nothing that would have been impossible to solve. Having Trade Card I can buy genuine parts for quite friendly price so I can't see why should be unhappy.  :y

Rust is unfortunate, but much better than the inferior pre face lift. ;D ;)

Thanks Chris. Yes I suppose it could have needed a whole bunch of other stuff so can't complain really.  :y
