I think my radio is on the way out , the cd part works great so I was wondering can I just take the radio of fmine and put on another one that works.

Yep - find another 2006 with a dud changer (there are loads out there) and swp over the top metal box - easy as that

I had to buy another unit to get the cd player part.
I might still have the radio. I'll check tomorrow  :y
