I'm intending to strip the top of the engine down to trace my minor coolant leak - while I'm in there, I figure I may as well renew any washers and the like that I come across (since they're most likely 166k miles old...). And the thermostat. Any recommendations for what's likely to need replacing?

the thermostadt housing and water transfer pipe might break when you try and get them off, mine did.

If replacing the stat its worth getting a new transfer pipe (comes with O rings).
If your realy want to go in deep then the dowty washers on the coolant bridge could be considered and also the return pipe to block seal on the rear of the block.

Transfer pipe is the one held by the b'tard bolt, am I right?
Might as well while I'm in there, and have got time...

B###ard bolt hold coolant transfer pipe to block. As trying to seperate the coolant pipe from stat housing is nearly impossible for the extra couple of ££,s worth just buy all new.
As said coolant bridge dowty washers x 4
O/S transfer pipe to rear of block "0" ring seal
If you really want " belt,n,braces" worth resealing oil cooler plate and replacing washers and seals to oil cooler ..2 rubber "0" rings and 4 metal crush washers.
As mentioned HBV but not much else that coolant can leak past except poor metal pipe clips/water pump seal etc etc. :y

Sweet, ta - I'll be talking nicely to my local dealer this week then! :y

Shouldnt work out too pricey assuming you don,t buy the thermostat from VX as plenty of places sell same OEM quality for much less.
Washers etc should be around £10-£15 assuming you do the lot...grey oil cooler plate goo couple of quid and transfer pipe £10 or sobut includes 2 "0" rings.
Budget around £50 but don,t forget 5ltrs of coolant aswell.....best of luck :y
