my mech changed what i believed to be the temp gauge, the gauge still does not work, 2.6 v6 engine. he did not take off the plenum but instead went deep behind the engine block and gained purchase in this area by removing the washer wiper motor and a few other bits, he did change something, perhaps he changed the wrong sensor or is there 2 because a very clever chap on this says the sensor lives between the v under the plenum thing and showed my a picture?, i really dont know whats been changed. anyway got a new mot on it today but with some advises but thats ok. i really must sort this temp gauge now. thanks all.

There are two temp sensors, one is a two pin device which provides a signal to the ECU and the other a single wire device for the temp gauge.
Its rare for the sensor to fail, usual cause is the wire coming off, does the temp gauge rise when stationary?

sir, no, totally dead, i wonder if he has changed the sensor that feeds the brains box, it did look like a 2 pin thing, he did not take the top bit off the engine, i might take this plenum off and have a look myself, my mech went deep behind the engine block, the gauge did work fine, took a drive out and when i next looked totally zero and nothing since, i bet he accidentally changed the wrong sensor, im worried to take off this plenum, any guide lines for me to follow or just unbolt and unclip everything i see. thanks

Sounds like that little brass connector has fallen off the sensor feed, which as posted before lives on top of the coolant bridge :y

ok and this bridge lives under the plenum, if easyish to remove i take it that it be quite clear what to change, will the car shop know what this brass thing is, do you think

Odds on that the connector has come adrift probably caused by a ham-fisted "mechanic" ::)

lol, thanks for your advice. ive checked out how to take the plenum off, basically i dont trust myself but i reckon the people on here are right and that i need the sensor changed on the bridge, i think he changed the ecu feed sensor, well at least thats done, lol. but actually my man is a good mech in general, i bet he has made a mistake. these things happen.

Its just the dash (the brass one) to be honest, if he did not remove the plenum I highly doubt he replaced anything.
You probably don't need sensor replacing, just small spade connector being plugged back on. As it worked, then stopped. Indicted its all fine, it just slipped off :y

My money is on a loose wire - just as has been said.

After removing the plenum and inlet manifold you will see something very similar to this

The coolant bridge is at the rear of the engine (near the top of this pic. and the sensor for the gauge is the little brass part in the middle of the bridge,between the two large bolts which bolt the bridge to the heads. Sounds like your mechanic has replaced the one which sends info to the ECU (as already mentioned) which is the one at the rear of the coolant bridge to the right of the gauge sensor.Connector just slides back onto the top of the sensor.

i am in new eltham near chislehurst etc. yes my man been around and i showed him the picture of the bridge under the plenum, well there are 2 sensors and he did change one of them which he believed to be correct by himself having a map of the area, it now appears the map picture he had was correct but he in turn got the wrong information from the man showing him the plan from the garage, arrr, now he sees this he has admitted it makes more sense and he really upset he did it wrong, well at least it appears my mech has replaced the sensor that feeds the ecu, not the gauge, blooming annoying as it is i cant be angry with him, its one of those things. well tomorrow he going to crack on and take the plenum off and replace the gauge, another ton of dosh i guess, can one feel the wire without taking this thing off, if it is just a loose wire and if i can just push it back that would be sound.

Said it a million times, the sensor does not need replacing!
