Title: Replacement Spare Key
Post by: acurrie7x on 21 September 2012, 19:49:54
Hey hey,

I recently bought my Dad's 52 Plate CD Omega from him. When he bought it in 2003 it was supplied with only one key.

I'm aware that it can be very expensive to replace the key at the dealership if it is lost, but is there an easy way for me to copy the existing key and programme it to the car? There are a lot of different keys available on eBay but I don't know if they're any use to me?

Thanks,

Alex.

Key horseshoe blank off ebay (make sure it comes with transponder chip) - about £7-£8
Get it cut to existing (got mine done for free)
Get remote off ebay (same type as your existing)
Put lot together and get Tech2'd to your car (TB's tech2 service did mine)

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply.

So I'd need to get something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-ASTRA-VECTRA-OMEGA-UNCUT-KEY-HEAD-INCLUDING-ID40-TRANSPONDER-CHIP-NEW-/320830898153?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item4ab302ffe9#ht_2078wt_1163

Get it cut at a locksmith. Then buy a shell including electronics, and then find someone who can Tech2 it for me? An auto locksmith?

Sounds quite expensive just for a spare key, really! :S

Vx quoted me £125 for a spare key (quite a few years ago)

Mine cost all in around £30!

Blank on ebay looks ok - same seller sells second hand fobs - just check it the same type as yours ;)

TB charges £15 for pogramming to car (I think :) ) :y

Think thats expensive - wait 'till you lose/misplace your only one  :o

I'm in Edinburgh so it looks like Hotel21 could be my man?

Yup, Hotel21 is your man.

You need to turn up to him with:
Key (easier if you've already had it cut) with transponder - ebay, less than a tenner delivered.
Fob (I would recommend a brand spankers from dealer, rather than 2nd hand, if its a facelift saloon) - £25+VAT approx trade price.
Carpass (it has the car's security number on it) - shop around, some dealers want £15+VAT, some want £50+VAT.

For the dealer parts, you could try a member here, andyc, for good prices.

Facelift Saloons use a 3 button fob, which are problematic once a few years old. The microswitches fail (easy enough to change with a steady hand and a compitent solderer, and available from the OOF Shop ::)), but if they are not changed, and fob continued to be used, as the user presses the buttons too hard (as it gets progressively worse), the rubber cover goes all manky, and falls apart. The replacement covers from ebay are universally shite.

Hope that clarifies.

The programming process is:

Programming the transponder (in the key) to the Immobiliser ECU
Programming the keyfob to the Alarm (most models) or Central Locking (GLS and ex-Plod) ECU.
