Post by: pete220 on 22 September 2012, 23:35:47
Hi all i have a strange viblration and rumble noise when i lift off the power between 50-70 mph could this be the prop shaft out of ballance or rubbers on the ends of the prop ? any ideas.
the car is a mv6 3.0 manual 2000 model

Cheers

Prop shaft shouldn't be out of balance unless it's been removed and not put back exactly as it was :-\

Jack up the car and support on axle stands with the front wheels chocked. Leave the car in neutral with the hand brake off. Underneath the car you should be able the see both ends of tyhe shaft and the centre bearing. Slowly turn the shaft and inspect the donuts at either end, any splits should be obvious. Also give it a good shake either side of the bearing, should be no play here, also listen/feel for roughness as you turn the shaft. There will be a bit of backlash at both the gearbox and the diff as you turn the shaft, this is normal, any hint of roughness/play at the bearing is not.

All Omega prop shafts are made of two parts, front and rear :y

All the rear shafts are the same, the fronts being different to allow for variations in engine and gearbox choices :y
