Title: Door wont shut
Post by: Sparks on 25 September 2012, 21:44:16
Hi all. yet another problem with my beloved Omega. Closed the drivers door this evening and it wouldn't close. The door just stays open and had to drive home with one hand on the door, good job it is an automatic. Even when central locking etc is activated the door will not lock and just swings open. Anybody had this problem and shed some light on it. Regards,Keith.

Does it fully close (even though it doesn't latch)?

If it does, the mech is jammed. Probably easier to replace with 2nd hand part. If near me, I'll do it for free for you, as I think I have one in garage. If not near me, try one of the OOF breakers.

If it doesn't close fully, try lifting external handle and pulling internal handle, in case mech is in the 'closed' position - this should release it to 'open' position

You could try taking the door card off & giving the whole mechanism a good dosing with a decent lub, failing that, I reckon it'd be easier all round to just swap for A N Other complete lock assembly. It's the 3 torx drive bolts on the side of the door & a few rods etc inside the door. Not too difficult, just make sure you drop the vertical rod from the outer handle in its correct 'hole' before you bolt it all back up again ....... or you'll have to remove it again when the outside door handle doesn't work!  ::)

Might I suggest leaving the boot open during the operation? Just in case a lever gets left off by mistake and all the locks SLAM down at any stage with the door closed. It's been known to happen!

But not the drivers window, else you'll struggle to even get at the lock mech ::)

Thanks for all the replies i managed to change the door latch but it took me ages. So arrived at work this morning feeling quite chuffed with my diy mechanics, applied the handbrake and nothing but fresh air. Been under car tonight and the cables from the joint are just loose and i cannot see anything attached to handbrake. Will it have snapped or just need re attaching as I have no experience of this. regards Keith.

No!  ;) But it's a temporary solution to his lack off handbrake and his car will saty where he left it :y. And if he'd done as 99% of all auto owners do and just put in in P in the first place ........... he'd have not broke the handbrake!  ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D

:y Got to agree with AndyB cos its all I tend to use....the P. Problem is when I take it for its MOT i generally have to pull the handbrake on a few times while in motion to equalise the brake test readings. It was the tester who advised me of that one and its worked every test up to now too.

Re Andy b suggestion of using park only.I have to park on a steep incline at work and when I put gear in park  before I put handbrake on on more than a couple of occasions I had trouble releasing the gear from park and on 1 particular occasion  thought I was going to have to call breakdown. I found the only solution was to apply the handbrake first then put it in park and when I returned after work released from park no problem

Handbrake procedure is simple ...

use it or lose it .....  :)

If the handbrake is used every time it will continue to work well, it is when it is NOT used that it starts to play up.

As the handbrake drum/shoe is totally independent of the disc brakes there are further advantages of using it correctly.

1. It does not wear out if applied when stationary, as there cannot be wear on non-moving parts.

2. Use of the handbrake and NOT the foot brake allows the foot brake disc to cool without creating "hotspots" that actually damages the disc

3. Use actuates the mechanism and so ensures longer life.
