Title: heavy steering
Post by: bigdom on 30 September 2012, 17:52:48
hi folks another hopefully wee problem with this omega I acquired is heavy steering, didn't know if it really was or I was just imagining it but today at supermarket it was that heavy when parking it was almost impossible to turn steering wheel, seemed to get lighter when applying throttle though, any ideas, its a 2.0 gls automatic, cheers in advance  :)

Steering will be heavier with low revs.

First check should really be the level in the power steering reservoir followed by the general condition of the fluid. If blackish brown could do with being replaced, after that it could be the pump is getting a bit tired.

Assume auxillary belt is around power steering pump pulley.?

Power assistance pump may be showing signs of tiedness or the aux belt might be slipping and your not getting full pump pressure. Low fluid level should be checked and check for leaks as well.

I see you have an Auto, does the steering get lighter when you put revs on, or when the car actually moves? Remember to check your tyres too.

..... Remember to check your tyres too.

SWMBO recently said that the steering on her Smart didn't feel quite right .... there was less than 10psi in one of the front tyres.  ???

Heavy steering at idle, that goes lighter with just a few extra revs, is a knackered PAS pump.

Im pretty sure it would be yes.Cant see why auto/manual would make a difference to the PAS pump. Hopefully others will confirm.
And PM incoming. :y
