Is stop/start technology really such a great idea, I mean does it save you that much fuel and if it does then can the idea be retro-fitted to any car?

new model low volume 4 pots may start easily..
but an old V6 with an old charging system will eat up the battery imo.. :-\

Don't think Omega starter motors would take too kindly to it, I don't like it. Something about sitting at a T junction waiting to pull out with engine off, I would rather have engine running.
On hire cars which have had it, i've disabled it.
Think retro fitting would be a nightmare...

besides v6 engines with large car bodies contradict with fuel efficiency from the beginning :-X

Golf blu motion(?) auto I had as a hire car had it. Absolutely appalling idea, when it comes to a driving experience.
Its not quick enough. With stop start on, you want to pull away, press the gas pedal, nothing, it's busy turning the engine on. ...THEN your allowed go pull away.
With SS off you want to pull away, press the gas pedal, nothing, it's got a built in pause for when it wants to start the engine. ...so you still can't pull away when you want.
Infuriating idea.
The Golf one seems to possibly work off vacume pressure from the brake servo, so it seas a drop in pressure as you gradually release the brake pedal pressure, and starts the engine, so you can be ready to pull away, but It still lags. Rubbish!
Anyway, to retro fit, you'd need to insure the starter didn't engage under load as you pull away, or it will brake sumat. I suppose there in lies the problem...?

Retro fit - use the ignition key mate it'll be easier :) :) :) ;)

It's a great idea. It saves a nanolitre of fuel when you stop at the lights, makes existing cr@p drivers even more hesitant when pulling out of junctions and, as an additional bonus, you get to throw away a starter motor (big block of steel) and battery (big block of lead - good for the environment, that one) much more regularly than you otherwise would. You also get the additional environmental benefits of same being shipped around the world to replace the failed items.
But.. CO2 out of the tailpipe is all the greenies are interested in, so cheap, crude, pointless measures like these will be used by manufacturers to shave a couple of points off the CO2 figure. It saves the reps a couple of pennies in tax and that can be enough to make your car come out on top.

A lot of these aids take control from the driver. There'll be a point where there's no point turning up. ;D
I had an S60 Diesel Auto. MASSIVE turbo lag. Press the pedal it creeps away. Press more, nothing, press even more nothing. Foot flat to the floor shouting. And It takes off like a scalded cat. Not want you want pulling out of a small side road onto a double lane one way high street with busy traffic and pedestrians on the other side of the road, while I'm flailing at the wheel, still shouting, trying to keep the poxy thing on line. ;D

Going to be a right pain as the vehicles get older. Who would want the car engine to stop when you have just got it going on a cold morning.
Electric handbrakes that wont stop binging when your working on them, along with open door chimes.Stupid dashes that dont show the basics such as oil pressure , temp and mileage are slowing driving me scatty.

And, as the extra charging batteries will put more load on alternator, the tiny savings in fuel will be used up with extra fuel due to alternator load.

I had stop/start on a brand new diesel mini 2 years ago, it knocked the battery out in under a year, took 3 breakdowns before BMW would change it under warranty.
If it were my car i wouldnt use it, knocks the battery and starter motor out prematurely to save a minute amount of fuel.
BMW system does react pretty quick though, starts as soon as you touch the clutch pedal.
other than that, pants.

I've used it before on a passat bluemotion I had hired for a week and thought it quite easy to use, once you touched the clutch the car would start again so you could be ready to go but I suppose it would be sore on batteries/starter motors in the long run. I've been hearing ads on the radio all day about the new volkswagen range all with stop/start (except the phaeton for some reason) so I thought I'd ask. Does any1 actually know how much fuel is being saved over say a week by stop/start????

I've used it before on a passat bluemotion I had hired for a week and thought it quite easy to use, once you touched the clutch the car would start again so you could be ready to go but I suppose it would be sore on batteries/starter motors in the long run. I've been hearing ads on the radio all day about the new volkswagen range all with stop/start (except the phaeton for some reason) so I thought I'd ask. Does any1 actually know how much fuel is being saved over say a week by stop/start????

You should try it in an Effing Truck :o :o :o With an auto gearbox and hybrid engine (diesel/electric) :-[ :-[ Pull up to a set of lights using brake pedal and engine cuts out ???........... Lights change, foot off brake and.......It first starts :), then contemplates which gear to select ???........Then applies some lipstick :-*..........wolf whistles passing ladies ::).......writes next weeks shopping list ???........And just as the lights change back to red shoots of like a rocket giving me the 17th case of whiplash this week :-[ and yet another 3 points for jumping the lights ;D ;D ;D Don't even mention roundabouts :o :o >:(

Autoboxes in trucks . I think the computer controlling the changes is made from zx81 remnants.you just cannot rush em.

The lad from across the road works at a main dealer (can't remember now which) he reckons that some of these poxy stop start cars also use the fan belt via the alternator to kick the engine back over again
