Question time?
T Cut - Basically there to get the crap out of paint on old cars?
Polish - Still takes (less) paint off a car (thats genrally why your duster ends up the same colour as the car
Wax - Seals the surface you rub it on to.
So
Most cars today are laquered (paint is underneath laquer)
So why is there so much bullshit from people wanting to extract money from us valeting services/products ?

hmm.. polish is the protector one , paste is the abrasive .. but generally speaking most valeting products mix silicone/wax and some fine paste together to shorten the job for newbies ;D
professional shops never use paste that includes silicone .. it destroys their paint job, also polishes are mostly applied outside painting area..
professional valeting requires long time.. the diesel particles, tree resin, tar from the asphalt all can drill into laquer under sun if they are not cleaned for some time.. and if a cars paint is in that condition, removing them requires serious work..
plus even removing tiny micro scratches is a nightmare and requires very refined paste (G3 not suitable) .. ask dark color car owners..

See the Detailing world web site.
If your polishing, and the cloth is turning the same colour as the paint you've buggered the paint job, as you've gone through the lacquer.
If you've ever owned a black car, you'd know the answers to all this, as the slightest blemish stands out.
It's all about keeping the swirls and scratches at bay. Then the gloss shines through in sunlight, not the swirls which if bad enough, will dull the paint(sorry, not paint, lacquer) and make it look milky.
It does work. If used correctly. Although as said, paint shops use different products, where as us muppets probably get something safer that's more difficult to cause damage, I guess. :-\
