Title: Watchdog
Post by: STMO123 on 03 October 2012, 21:05:43
Did anyone watch it? I cant believe that drug companies are allowed to get away with selling 'targetted' painkillers that are exactly the same as supermarket paracetamol! Same fickin licence number and EXACTLY the same amount of active ingredient. Money grubbing backstuds.

And...?

Its marketing isnt it. The same way Evian sell their water proclaiming "live young". Really? Its just H2O?

Its up to the consumer to look at the ingredients and choose if they believe the branding/claims.

I agree with you up to a point, but I think anything to do with medicines of any sort should be regulated. I was going to go on about the principle of it but, you're right, they have no principles.

Same with anything mate - seen premium margarine packs being filled and line changed over to own brand - only change was packaging, same product.  Same with sauces, salad creams, drugs etc etc.  Its been that way for years and not only in UK - seen similar in France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway and others.

Not quite that simple from memory...

Main company spends millions developing drug....then gets exclusive license for x (10?) years
noone elese can sell the same drug in that time to allow them to fix their price to recover costs, make money.

After that, its free for all, anyone can make and sell the same drug as cheap as they like.

Doctors must prescribe by the generic name for NHS prescriptions in order for the pharmacist to provide the cheapest option.

I think that there is a loophole for the exclusive license to be extended by changing the formula of the drug

ASDA paracetamol: 15p for 16 tabs
Anadin paracetamol: 1.50 for 16 tabs; you can work out the mark up yourself!

But there are people I meet who feel that Anadin works, while regular paracetamol doesn't, and no amount of explanation can convince them otherwise.

and there always will be,its like nurofen and unmarked anti inflamatory...no difference apart from package...but with all pain reduction,it is what works for them at the time...most of the time it is a placebo effect
