On the way to the airport last weekend, at about 30mph accelerating gently (as always ::)) there was a sudden jolt from the transmission, the spanner light came on, and I think it went into limp mode, as it was necessary to select first manually to get it to go decently. On arrival at airport hotel, a few miles later, I cleared the light after two restarts, and had no problems on the 90 mile return trip (although that was nearly all at 80 on motorways). The stored code is 1700 (service vehicle soon request from transmission control module) so I guess that the auto box could do with a service as it is now at 52k and 11 years old. Any comments? :y

You need the codes from the gearbox ECU ideally.
Do the lights next to the gear selector behave themselves as you shift through the positions? Not flickering or all coming on together?
Probably worth changing the fluid and filter by now anyway, but worth checking to see what the ECU is unhappy about first.
-
That's odd... I think I've only ever known that code show after a flat battery/low charge moment ::)
As Kev says... Need to check the gearbox ECU really :y
-
Thanks Kev, Paul. I'll do the service and then check again, as I assume it needs Tech2 to read the box ECU.
All the gearbox lights work normally Kevin.:y

I remain unconvinced that autobox service is the correct first base on this.
From experience of the fault you describe would replace crank sensor first - if it does it again then fair enough go for ATF and filter.
Kevin checked my stored codes after I had a P1700 and we got 0725 and 0730 but I had already changed crank sensor prior to his visit so to be fair the 0725 could have been unrelated but car has been steady since.

Hmmmmm. :-\ Thanks for that, I have a crank sensor, but I think as its due a box service, I'll do it anyway. Am I correct that stored codes should appear with pedal trick? :y

The P1700 means the TCM has asked the engine ECU to reduce torque, and make driver aware.

Pedal trick reads engine ECU only ;)

Thanks Paul, so Tech 2 rqd to read the gearbox ECU yes?

Indeed, so it could be a multitude of gearbox issues, hence the need to read that ECU too before doing much more, IMHO.
I have also seen unrelated engine issues cause this, probably because the link between engine and gearbox ECU drops when the engine ECU gets in a tizz.

Thanks Kevin. I need to pay a visit to Alton methinks. ::) :y

Ah sugar, if you do go to Alton, ask Kevin Wood to check his gauge/ecu temps... ...I forgot :-[

Sorry Jaime, didn't see your reply before I went down there this afternoon. However Kevin kindly spent two hours checking everything. I have a P0730 transmission code stored, so a box service is next on my list. Also a cooling fan (the rear pax side one) is not running when it should, and although Kevin did considerable trouble shooting we (well he ::)) could not track the problem down, other than it is almost certainly a wiring/connection problem somewhere, so this probably relates to any incorrect temp readings I have. :y
-
Well, not much conclusive in the gearbox ECU. P0730 Not Present. Unknown by Tech 2 and not listed in TIS. :-\
A google suggests it's an incorrect ratio code. It drives perfectly OK and no sign of any codes or problems in the engine or ABS/TC.
I vaguely remember seeing such an unknown code in a gearbox ECU before. Might have been a 2.2 with cam sensor issues. Crank sensor routing is indicative that it might be on the original.. Nothing to suggest it might be causing problems.
There was a coolant issue, though. Temperature rose to 106 (indicated by engine ECU) before fans came on flat out. There's a break in the circuit between the thermoswitch and relay in the ECU box for the first stage fan speed somewhere.
Dash gauge was reading about 95 at this point. Will have to check mine to see if this is normal.

There are two or three examples on here previously Kevin, dating back to 2008. :y
-
P0730 is a GS820 code, incorrect ratio. TIS doesn't list a Incorrect Ratio code for GS821, so suspect its a cock-up with TIS.
Shackeng - have you ever felt excessive slip, or occasionally the engine flares a bit on gear changes?

No, just the incident described in my OP. Otherwise it has been perfect ever since I bought it last year. However I have only done about 3000 miles in it.

I'm having similar symptoms with my box, have had the oil changed in the autobox, though it is much smoother I'm still getting the "thud" when it decides not to change up to third or fourth! Plus after a bit of town driving the cab smells like burning oil!
EML light is on with codes 0420 & 0430 (Cats) and 0700 code for the box!

PM Marks DTM Calib (West Bridgford), and see if he can read gearbox - he has the full Tech2 setup :)

Did you change the crank sensor?

I saved this info, when I was diagnosing dead ABS module:
The P1700 is just a request for the check engine light, and this is caused by the U2108. The U2108 is basically telling you that the Electronic Brake and Traction Control Module (EBTCM) is not communicating with the powertrain control module, or the transmission control module.
The very first thing we must do is verify that the fuses that power the ebtcm are not blown and that they are powered. At this point I would like you to verify that the fuse labeled ABS in the fuse block is not blown and that it is powered with the key in the on position.
I would also like you to verify that the fuse labeled V1 inthe power distribution box is not burnt and that this is powered also. After this we need to move to the ebtcm to verify that you have voltage at pins 15,17,18 and that you have a ground at 19 and 16.
This would verify that the ebtcm is getting the proper voltage supplies to operate. The end result of this may possibly be a faulty ebtcm, but at this point we really need to check these items prior.Feel free to contact me with any questions at this point! Thanks!
P1700....Malfunction Indicator Lamp requested by trans control module
This code (U2108) is a communications error with the ABS module. This goes hand-in-hand with the TC and ABS lights and code P0500. The VSS is wired to the ABS first, then carries over to the ECU and speedometer. I found this out the hard way with a buddy's Catera. When the ABS module has communications errors, the speedometer loses signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
Most of the abs ecu tcu proplems cuesd by low A OR NON SUTABLE BATTERRY
if u have the abs and the tc lights no speedo u may check the wheel sensors first of all ,U2108 in most cases reqest to replace anew (EBTCM) IF U GOING DRIVE WITH U2108 ERROR U WELL HAVE ANEW ERROR CODE P1700 AND WELL FORCE PROPLEMS WITH THE TCU , AFTER REPLACING ANEW EBTCM YOU MUST REMOVE ALL THE ERRORS CODES FROME THE MEMORY

Did you change the crank sensor?
I haven't changed it yet as it didn't throw up any errors for it but I have read it can lead to problems with the outbox! I had the gearbox ECU read last night with a Tech2 which had a "Not present" error with engine speed input to transmission, its been cleared for now to see how it behaves but the gearbox got stuck in second again half a mile down the road and "thudded" into third, no lights were thrown up though, usually when you get a violent jolt it'll go into limp mode on the box! I still think the failing cats are contributing to this!

That is incomplete, hence the requirement to read the codes from the TCM and ABS :y
