Title: I've got good news and bad news
Post by: Paulus on 24 April 2008, 12:17:33
The bad news is that I got a coolant leak whilst on the M6 yesterday so I had to pull over and put some water in it at J13. I just made it on to the slip road before the temperature went through the roof. The water I put in got me home.

The good news is that it was the big pipe off the top of the rad, so 30 mins later, I had taken it off, cut the end 50mm off (where the split was) and had got it back together again.

Lesson for the day...always carry some water in the car (I keep it in with the spare wheel).

Happy days!

If you do not have a supply of water with you remember that nature sometimes provides an ideal solution  ;) ;D

However cani just say that attempting to do that on the side on the M6 WILL get you a visit from the police  ;D ;D and also some very strange looks

I would be interested in the corrosion inhibition / promotion properties of that type of coolant too.  ;) Still, when needs must...

And try to use an intermediate container --- welding yourself to the top of the rad doesn't bear thinking about -- let alone explaining yourself at A&E !  :o

Ladies, imaging perching on the top of the engine and peeing into the rad?!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  It does not bear thinking about & would guarantee police attention! ;D ;D ;D

I would recommend only men attepting the 'natural fill'!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Always make sure the engine's cooled off before you fill it. Otherwise, the resulting geyser of steam and hot water.. well.. :'(

 ;)

I carry a bottle of Tesco water in my car (for dogs/emergencies etc.); the bottle states: "Still Water".....`everytime I see it, the question: "What did you expect it to be now?" comes to mind!  ;D

Yeah, but at least you have a nice plastic bottle to show for it at the end which can be useful if caught short!  ;D ;D

i did just that on the side of the m6 in an overheating capri in the early eighties,in a panic to catch liverpool-belfast ferry.it didnt work, the engine was still way too hot and threw a load of putrid steam back out.it was via a bottle tho so at least i didnt boil the meat and 2 veg  :-[ ;D

Because I don't like bottled still water and the fizzy stuff is only about 16p anyway.

I suppose it was better than cola or lemonade
