Title: rowing boat
Post by: swordfish on 07 October 2012, 21:44:35
Is the elite' meant to feel like a fat knacker in a small rowing boat when you go round a corner :o ;D :o ;D :o

It is soft, esp if you are used to FWD shitboxes.

Personally, I find the Elite too soft. But its still capable in the bends.

Too soft for me too but, as you say, capable in the bends if you allow for the body roll :y

Improved it or altered it? Two different things. If you want to drive a car that corners like on rails, then buy a 'sports' car or something like a FWD Astra/Focus/etc An Omega, whether the 'go-faster MV6 or the 'executive' Elite, was always intended to be a large motorway cruiser and not a 'hot hatch' for flinging around corners.

I've not driven many FWD cars that I would describe as "cornering on rails"... I find they break traction too easily when pressing on ::)

As you say, the Omega is no sports car but it can be made capable... Very capable actually ;)

I'm not denying that it can, but by & large, cars like the Omega were never designed to do so. Not everyone wants to be able to feel every crisp packet on the road.  ;)  ;)

I could make my crappy diseasal astra go round some of the bends on my way to work far faster than the Omega would go round them, partly due to the fact it was half a ton lighter.  ;)

Indeed, and, having fitted poly bushes to mine, there isn't really a significant downside in terms of ride comfort, IMHO. In addition, you don't have the change them every 18 months, so I would advise anyone to fit them, whatever their driving aspirations.

With poly bushes front and rear, plod springs and self levelling shocks, mine is nice and tight without being at all harsh, and not much roll either 8). Will be interesting to see what if any difference changing the springs makes :-\

.... mine is nice and tight without being at all harsh,  ....

surely that's an oxymoron  ???  ???  ??? I've been in cars where they've been lowered to within an inch of their lives & even though it'd go around a corner, I'd have not wanted to go very far in it.
As above, I like the 'ride in my boat'. I always used to have my Senny's suspension set to 'C' (comfort) much to SWMBO's disgust, as I do with my R Class. If I want to drive fast around corners, I use her Smart Roadster - that corners like on rails  :y  :y  :y

I couldn't think of a better way of putting it :-\ lithe perhaps, or supple ::)

The Smarts only corner so well because they're rear wheel drive and four feet long :P

along withthe fact your bum is only inches off the floor & the suspension is fairly firm   :y  :y (though some lower them even more  ???)

yes' i hate front wheel drive shit boxes . and i dont drive round like an extrack driver . but going from a carlton gsi 24v to the elite it just feels a bit wooley in the corners. i might switch to mv6 set up :y

After much deliberation I opted for poly'd front wishbones, MV6 suspension and Bilstein B4 'oem replacement' (in reality slightly firmer than original) suspension.

Still smoother in a straight line than anything, and still capable in the corners, without compromising on anything. As said, if you want a sports car, get a sports car, however I'd recommend slowly replacing the suspension components for new, refurbed, or good known used parts so as to give you the best shot at good handling. TO be fair if the springs are all original they could well have sagged a fair whack.

When I replaced my rear springs for MV6 the back end lifted by about 1-2 inch... for 10mm lower-than-standard lower springs.  :y The originals were sagged a fair bit, which I never realised until I changed them.  :)

To be honest I like my Elite the way it is[standard as far as I know]It can be hustled along quite nicely, treat them for what they are and there's no problem.
