I have been unable to find any particular reference to this in previous posts - is there any actual difference between auto gearboxes, say with 2.6 and 3.2?
Parts listings show a variety of auto gear boxes part numbers for the Omegas, identified only by ident numbers, not engine size.
I wondered if anyone had information on this - are the 2.6 and 3.2 the same gearbox; any difference being in the torque converter with the final ratios transmitted to the rear wheels being determined by the diff, or are the gearbox ratios different?
In short, can a gearbox from a 2.6 be fitted in a 3.2, or am I looking at further problems? Reprogramming the gearbox ECU for example?
Or would it be wise to find and fit a gearbox with the same ident number?
Anyone with experience of this or the technical info that could shed any light would be greatly appreciated.

3.2 (and earlier 3.0) use AR35 unit.All others use the less strong AR25 unit.If your changing the box on a car fitted with an AR25 you can use an AR35 (its a straight swop on petrol models),in fact its advisable to do so while the opportunity is there to do so.
No point fitting an AR25 from a 2.6 into a 3.2.It would fit ok but wouldnt last very long.The torque of the 3.2 would chew it up. :y

And the manuals up to 2.6 ltr take the R25, 3.0 & 3.2`s take the R28

Well that's cleared that point up as to whether a 2.6 and 3.2 are interchangeable, many thanks - just one thing, Albitz refers to an AR35 and RobG it an R28 - I'm slightly confused....

AR = Auto
R = Manual

Got that now - if I had read the replies properly, it would help!!
Thanks again.

Only 3.0 uses R28, 3.2 uses R30 ;)

So it would be OK to fit a autobox from a 1999 facelift 3.0 into a 2003 3.2? I presume that from the info given that they both have AR35 boxes?
Thanks

Yes. Both have the AR35 (35 = rated to 350Nm).
