Title: This evening's extended outage
Post by: TheBoy on 23 April 2008, 22:18:08
We have had to have an emergency outage this evening due to unforeseen circumstances.  We are working hard to ascertain how this set of circumstances came about, and what we can do to try and avoid a repeat.

On behalf of the Admin team I would like to apologise for any inconvenience.

The problem was with the Windows host server using excessive resources, causing the Linux virtual machine that OOF runs on to drag itself to a crawl, and run out of resources itself.

IMHO there is no need to apologise... you work damned hard - and unpaid - to keep the site going on our behalf.

Yes I missed the last few hours ... but the site is back and will continue to run - I'm sure you'll find and fix the problem just like you always do.

I am also mindful that you too have a life to lead, and cannot spend all day, every day, on the site.

All in all ..........    THANKYOU

Running Linux in a VM which is running on Windows.... You seem to be operating the monster server from hell!

How about we have a whip round for a server box you can run OOF from. Or am I being simple?

Nothing wrong with VMs.  Virtually everyone is (or will be) using them in one form or another.

Ironically, I'm on a course for one of Solaris's virtual technologies this week.

Jaime, and the rest of you,

Thanks for all you do for us all.

Would 1U rack mounted HP DL360 web server as a redundancy server be of any use to you?
