Title: aengine stopped for no reason
Post by: Terbs on 12 October 2012, 11:57:19
Obviously there must be a reason !!!!!! ;)

Twice now the engine has just stopped for no apparent reason, both times at idle in a traffic queue. Restarts with no problem first time of asking. Strangely, went out a couple of days ago to start it and would barely turn over :( Left it tell next day, went out and it started, although with its normal gusty self. Yesterday, it was flat again. I attached a starter pack to it and it fired like a brand new car. Thing is I have just tried the Starter pack and its nearly flat. The car has just started again 100% perfect.

Could a loose wire, say earth connection cause this. By just connecting the starter pack, could this have made the connection make contact. Car has not been anywhere to charge it up, but the battery is reading a good 12volts on my meter. Could a loose connection cause the engine to stop after being driven for ten miles.
Baffling

For those that know....I still have the slight misfire, but I don't expect that is connected in any way. Have not had time to delve into that one :y

have you checked for fault codes?
You could be on track with your electrical issue..

or could be crank sensor
idle control valve could also be misbehaving.

Have not done a fault code check recently, TB did a Tech2 a few weeks back and everything was clear ( he was checking to see if anything showed because of the misfire)

Only thing on that one was, he said there was a vacuum problem, which I sorted with a new box (hopefully) :y

So I assume its a case of tightening everything around the battery. When you talk about the crank sensor, is that in reference to the engine just cutting out?

yes, do the old paperclip test and check for codes...
find a 19, and you have your problem.

after the car has been run a while, check for any cables being hot, indicating a bad connection and resistance issue.

There is a guide on checking electrics iirc :y

Give us a chance Al.....I can't find a bloody paper clip yet ;D ;D ;D ;D

No fuel tank issues mate, never let it get much below half :y

Jimbob types faster than me ::)

The fuel level has caught me out before now, cutting out before the light has even come on ;D

Weak battery perhaps  :-\ though they do tend to fail quite suddenly rather than gradually fading.

Done the paperclip test :y

Only showing code 31, which according to the vid on here , is the correct code for V6 with no engine running. Good in one sense, bad in as much as back at square one.
I do assume by this, that whatever is wrong, is not going to be major ;)

Could still be crank sensor, doesn't always log a code!

If you're going to Oxford on Sunday I'd wait and let the wise ones take a gander, much better chance of bottoming it out :y

You are right, Ken....we are going to Oxford as things stand, unless the weather lashes it down. I'm always wary of dabbling into the unknown :y

I'm not sure wether there will be a Tech 2 in attendance but I'm sure there will be a few code readers knocking around and with the knowledge that will be floating around you should hopefully get the answer you're looking for, that's of course if you can get them off the model trains :-\ :y

Think I know now...its what Jimbob said...Idle Control Valve.... :-[ :-[ :-[

Is it the same as what is called Idle Air Control Valve in the maintenance section :)

Appologies for dumbness, but I am trying ;D
