After 6 days bombing round northern Spain in a piece of crap corser, sleeping on a rock hard bed giving me a stiff neck, and 1.5 hour Ryan air flight, with SCRATCH CARD announcements every 15mins >:( ... I Can Not Tell you how pleased I was to get in my car at Stanstead and drive home.
Filthy weather, storms and lightening, floods and no visibility in places on the m25 and m4. No problem. Smooth comfy power.
Haaaahhh My Car. My lovely lovely car. :-* :y
-
;D ;D ;D
Was Spain itself to your liking? I hope you got up into the Picos de Europa?
-
I know what you mean - i tend to drive SWMBO Fiesta and only occasionally drive the mig now. Absence makes the heart...
-
Think your right there Chris. You seem to take them for granted when you either swap cars or use another....
-
Spain was very much to my liking Varche, I wonderful part of the world. Not as hot as the south, but that's a plus IMO.
Take the North coast of Cornwall, and the Lake district with snow on top, and multiply by about 500. Dramatic cost lines from Bilbao past Santander to Llanes and Barro where we stayed, then up to Cavadonga, and the lakes above. Snow covered mountains, and 1.5 hours later your sat by the sea. Awesome.
The road from Bibao (and the Googgenheim) all the way along the a8, absolutely awesome views of mountains and sea. Barely a straight bit on it too. :y
-
Being fair, a bed of nails would have fealt comfy after the Corsa. But its just so easy to drive an omega. If only I could have taken it with me :-X
-
Given the choice of pushing the car there and back or flying Ryanair, I would push the car every time, even with the handbrake on :-X
As you can see we've saved the best of the weather for your return ;D
-
Chris , next time visit my country .. :y
but not in october and not with Ryan Air please!!
-

Can't wait to get mine back ....... ::)

Not for £84 return Stanstead to Santander for two people you couldn't. That's the problem, they're too cheap. Being fair, they aren't as bad as they used to be.
-
I managed to put 6933 miles on my hire car whilst away....
-
Might have managed 693 ;D
Where d ya go...?
Mind you, you had a bit more time than I did. ;)
-
The service or lack of is the least of the reasons that I won't fly with them ...ever :-X
-
As many know, I would rather cut my own leg off then rely on Ryan Air for anything more than a 1-2 day business trip with hand luggage only!
I know the northern road well, we put the wave power buoy at Santona between Santander and Bilbao.
But I find Spain a frustratingly slow and infuriating place to do work! ;D
-
Yeah see, you'll not get far in Spain with that attitude Mark. :D

Yeah, only the Greeks can beat them at sitting on a chair by the roadside with a fag and a can of beer, though. ;D

Yep I had technical responsibility for a manufacturing plant in Spain a few years back - the mañana syndrome can be very frustrating ;)

Not suffered Ryanair (or at least don't recall it). SleazyJet, yeah, use them a lot. The really low cost budgets are cheap and nasty, but do the job. If you have to start adding their options, like Dell PCs, you get butt-raped. Sleazy were £30 per bag.

Never made it to Turkey, nearest I've made is Kos and Cyprus. But I can confirm the Spanish are happy to put even the most urgent job off until tomorrow...
-
Did you remember to hand the Corsa back to the Hire Co before you got on the plane, been there, done that!

I find that too each time I go back home to Scotland or to in Laws in London. The last three hire cars have been Astras and Insignia and were handed back with no hesitation Once back home the drive back ( usually late at night ) from Cork to Kerry across the Caha Mountains is always a delight and I've never been anything but happy and content to back in the Omega's armchair.
-
Driving across to Kerry would be an absolute joy no matter what you were driving Don.In fact last time I did it (about 15 years ago) I was driving a Sierra and it was still a wonderful experience. :y

my citizens can even send you to another hospital miles away when your heart is stopped with an axe on your chest :-X so time doesnt mean something on this land ;D :-X

... Driving home tonight. Appalling traffic on the m4. Cared not a jot, for once.
...would have been a different story before the holiday though. And I suppose things will be back to normal by the middle of next week.
But for now, just happy to be in it, knowing how lucky I am/how different things could be.... In a Corsa. :(
:y

There are worse hire cars than a Corsa... ...I've had most of them ;D

Had a new shape 1.2 courtesy :-\ car complete with factory fitted hesitancy and misfire ;D
If people feel obliged to buy these types of car, then the least the manufacturers can do is fit a proper engine ::)
-
I had a ford KA hire car once , was quite pleased with it :-X
-
Mrs CG had a Ka(k) once. Possibly the most uncomfortable car I've ever been in. And it didn't have pas, which was a real nuisance.
But it handled better than the corser. Much better, IMO.
-
Being 240 mile away in a broken down mig ::) i was pleased to continue my journey in the KA whilst the mig was towed back the next day ;D This KA was fairly new at the time and was the luxury model ... having seen how they rot from inside out its put me off them a bit ::)
-
Nice pictures Mr Gixer, reminds me of home (the halway up and down a mountain ones).
I used to have a Ka in England just for return trips. It was OK. ;D
-
I think something amiss with the one you hired then, chrisgixer, as the new Corsa's handling, whilst not fantastic, is perfectly in tune with other similar sized shitboxes. IME, anyway.
-
Amiss? With a hire car...? Never! ;D
It probably had 10psi in 3 of the tyres.

The Merc is my daily drive at the mo, but I've abit of a trip to do this week so I'll fire up The Mig! :) I'm looking forward to the extra cylinder and the faster go-juice!!! :y :y :y

Unfortunately thats true , the small cars dont seem to get the body protection underneath ..a minor detail ::) many mot men fall about laughing when a Ka pulls into the test center :( ;D

Epoxy is King ;D :y

I've worked on studio builds in spain, greece, south of france, italy, and turkey....
(amongst other places)
NONE of them hold a candle to west coast Ireland(Eire) in terms of "snails pace to do business" work ethic (or lack thereof)
seriously.....
-
Doesnt matter though,as theres all that proper Guiness and then theres the scenery, and the friendly people. No reason to hurry, none at all. ;)
It just wouldnt be right to rush & tear in a place like that. :)

Oops! Might have slipped up last time I was over there in the kit car, then. :-[

Fast cars and bikes are fine Kevin.Thats rushing for enjoyment so completely acceptable. :y ;D
You see, when god made County Kerry he made it the most beautiful place of all,and then he made a network of beautiful roads all around it,the purpose of which was to thrash rally cars etc around them. :y :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoulcbiJ6wY
And in Country Antrim he did the same for bikes. :)

Why did I ever leave ? Stupid boy. ::) ;D

despite the irish navvy type having an excellent reputation for road building, i have to say, having done an attempt at a mad dash from galway to shannon and back, i found out pretty damn quick why there weren't many speed cameras.... the roads were so bad, no one in their right mind wants to go that fast....
i was in the Sintra (3.0 24v V6 ) at the time, which is basically a 7 seater van that thinks it's a 3.0 elite estate, with extra ground clearance... self levelling set up, comfy seats, , smooth, and fast.... and even that struggled with those bloody roads....
if i have to go back, i'm taking a sodding hire car, no way i'm trashing my Mv6 suspension on that lot ....
-
Yeah.. You do have to be wary of the road condition. Mate of mine removed a cats' eye with his sump (it was a dry sump too!). It was certainly a dry sump when he stopped for fuel and 5 litres of oil drained out as soon as the scavenge pump stopped. ;D
-
Swap the Guiness for Woodfords and you could easily be in Norfolk :y
-
Naarfik !! you must be joking, scenery is flat as a witches tit,and as for the people - Twiglet lives there. :D ;D

Drove the Bullet today, for the first time since getting new rubber on TBE. I love the Silver Bullet. I was on a real buzz when I got to work this morning, and again when I got home.
Did I mention, I love the Silver Bullet. What a car.
-
Fallen out with mine. Bloody great 13mm bolt, with shank, punctured my drivers side rear. >:(
-
Although it wasn't really my lovely cars fault. :)

At least the tyres are new enough, if it needs a replacement, just a single tyre should be OK. £250ish?

So after sitting for 6 weeks or so I reconnected the battery on The Mig and she fired up first time! :y The Merc then had a jealous hissy fit and decided not to play >:( , so I left her to stew and took The Mig out for the day!! :y When we got back, The Merc had mellowed somewhat and with a bit of help from The Mig and a lot of coughing and spluttering we got her going again! ::) The Merc is now reinstated to Number 1 daily drive..... Just don't tell her that my real affections lie with The Mig!! :-*
