I had a strange one happen this morn. I was driving at thirty & I'd been driving around five mins when for not quite a second the electrics just seem to die. The lights didn't dim, just the speedo, rev counter, temp & fuel gauge all dropped, the ignition lights came on & then back on again Just as though I'd turned off the ignition & back on again.
It's a weird one this :-\ :-\ Any idea please :( ???

I should also add that the engine didn't skip a beat like I thought it would have.

my mam has experienced odd things with the car.... i have personally never seen it happen.
she reckons the indicators get stuck on from time to time even when youve cancelled them ??? not doubting her but this was the woman who called me panicking late a few saturdays ago to say the car wouldnt start...... then she popped it in 'park' and it started ::) ;D

not silly but sounds like loose contact behind clocks mate only a guess though

Certainly worth gently but firmly (if that makes sense) pushing the intrument binacle in towards the dash, to make sure it's fully home into the connector plug Pete. Have you had it out for any reason?

Clocks not seated properly in the start socket looking thing behind. As said.
If you ever have the clocks out, have a look at where the pins mark the contacts. They don't line up too well, and could do with a bit more reach.

sorry this is a bit obvious, but I'd look at alternator or battery

Me too.If the clocks lost contact with the cars electrickery I doubt the ignition light etc. would come on. :-\

Ah, read the last line too quick. Yes, bit more to it than clocks.

I'll make an assumption here;
Pete meant that the lights (the illumination of the instrument binnacle) remained perfectly lit, but the analogue dials failed momentarily before recovering several seconds later.
Alternator and Battery can be pretty much discounted due to the car behaving normally other than this brief issue.
Instrument Cluster connection is still a possibility, but why just the once? I would expect this to happen frequently if something had worked loose, or perhaps happen when on rough ground???
Because it affected the Fuel and Temp gauges, we can rule out a TC/ABS issue.

These are the symptoms seen when the alternator is failed, perhaps this was just a warning that something is not right...Also I would double check that the ignition light is working as when it happend to us I thought 'oh good' the light has gone out, the bulb had blown.... ::) ::)

No rough road so that's not the answer. I fitted a new regulator to the alternator a few months back. The lights didn't dim which I would have thought they would have if it was the alternator.
I haven't removed the cluster & like said, it would probably happen more.
Thanks for the suggestions & I'll keep you all posted if it happens again.
