Thanks to Amba giving some great guidance the exhaust manifold gasket was changed but got some really weird emmision results.

With the leak just slightly high lambda readings but without the leak :

                  limit                            reading
Fast idle   
CO            under 0.300%              3.697% :o ( previously -0.004% with leak )
HC            under 200 ppm            244 ppm
Lambda     0.970-1.030                 0.877

Any suggestions what would cause such a variance, pass was a favour from a mate but I want to get it sorted

Sounds like it was not upto temperature and is still running open loop

He said he had held it at 2500rpm for 5 minutes to try and get it down  :-\ . Would a dodgy coil pack contribute to this as it is a little lumpy at idle, or the fact I nicked the plastic ring round one of the injectors when refitting the fuel rail
