Title: Ford's Southampton Transit factory closure
Post by: Nickbat on 01 November 2012, 13:29:32
Helped along by an EU loan to increase Transit production in Turkey. Must be comforting to those workers who are losing their jobs.  ::) ::) >:(

Local MPs have been jumping up and down since it was provisionally announced last week...

A shame, really, not helped by the shocking build quality of the turkish built Transits.

I thought that the EU frowned upon state intervention or assistance as it distorts the single market...  :-\  Oh wait a minute silly me, it dosn't apply in this case as Turkey isn't a member of the EU....  ::)  It makes you wonder who else the EU finances using OUR money.....  >:(

I did hear of a bloke from Berkshire way who applied for a loan from the EU to set up a banana plantation in Ukraine....  :-X

Its hardly surprising, the Transit has been loosing market share hand over fist for the last twenty years so there was always going to be at least one plant closed.

The closure has been muttered about for 20 years to my knowledge. It does not employ anywhere near the numbers it once did. It is a big blow to the local community. We have lost quite a lot of jobs here recently, mainly from the private sector.

In my lifetime this is the first recession to really hit this area.  :(

No didn't get it, the wrong variety of tree, called 'politician' couldn't get them to grow them straight enough, but they are very impressed with my plans and their potential grant offer for an Eco friendly direct biomass powered Miggy, only problem is that there are no Indian takeaways in the Ukraine.   :P ;D ;D ;D

I was in Russia a while back and they had quite a few transits there. Although they looked slightly different, things like lights, bumpers and plastic trim that is easy to change, you could tell they were transits. I can't remember what they were badged as, probably some obscure Russian name no one has ever heard of. Must be simlar to the same platform having different badges here I suppose? Various fords/volvos/mazdas, Nissan/vauxhall/Renault vans etc, a huge list from what I can see.
