went to the petrol station today and pulled up behind an Audi a4 convertible with a private plate that spelled cr*p which made me laugh, anyway noticed it had a flat tyre on the rear and as the guy(a 30 something c*ck!) approached I got out to point out that his tyre was flat and that he should put some air in , to which he said "don't see why I should pay 50p to pump up tyre" and drove off!
I just stood there in disbelief thinking what a c*ck, that's the last time I tell anyone their tyre's flat ;D

50p for air vs £150 for a new tyre ........ mmmm? What a c0ck! ;D ;D

yep and dare I say typical guy...... :D Lee
-
Probably a company car so he doesn't give a toss :o
-
20p here :D Probably his wife's car ::)
-
Lets hope he's dragging himself out of a ditch.
A few less Audis on the road can only be a good thing for humanity.

Paying for air?????? Bloody 'ell. Do they charge you for the water to top up washers too????

Air is 20p at most places around here, except for M4 Junction 47 services....£1.00 :o

Unbelievable. Truely outragious.

Tesco Bletchley is either £1 or £2 (can't remember), but I think thats to discourage the local scrotes from being tossers.

Welcome to ripoff Britain. ;)
I think it should be illegal to charge for air for tyres. Its a vital safety issue.

The compressors cost a small fortune. The Tesco's £1 (or £1.50 in some) is for Air and ScreenWash mix, and you get a fair amount of ScreenWash, so IMO, quite a fair deal for most people who dont have the sense to carry a bottle of ScreenWash and a 'Fag Lighter' compressor in the boot.
-
I bought 5 litres of screenwash for 75p (iirc) in Tescos last week. ;)
-
You can check the pressure before paying anything though (at least you can at my local texaco). That way if they are ok you don't pay anything.

So are tyres and brakes. Should Tesco pay for those as well?

No but its air ffs. It was always free from every garage in the land to assist customers in completeing their journeys safely. Then the big supermarkets started selling petrol, then started selling air and pretty son they all did it.

But who then should pay for all the equipment, were not talking of a £50.00 Aldi compressor are we..... :) :)
-
I have an airline at work and my own pressure gauge,so never use the garage ones. :)
Garage airlines should only be used in an emergency/ last resort anyway imo because if you have driven for much more than a mile or so the tyres will have heated up and expanded,so you will get an innaccurate reading from a gauge which is also probably innaccurate.

Tesco. :)
Garages always provided it free in the past,so Im sure they still could if they had to. ;)

Compressed air is quite expensive to produce :y
-
So how come every one man garage in every one shop village in the U.K. used to happily provide it f.o.c. until relatively recently ?
Most garages thesedays are part of some big conglomerate,so in the grand scheme of things its pocket change to them.
-
Bowlicks,wrong thread. :-[ ;D
-
The garages stopped doing "free air" when the Weights & Measures folks got involved and the gauges they use MUST (by law) be accurate.
They can now be "done" for an inaccurate gauge, so have to PAY, yes PAY, to have the system calibrated. Add the cost of the equipment, cost of electricity and the replacement costs of all the gauges the inconsiderate idiots break by throwing them on the floor/running over them etc etc .. and I'm not surprised a charge is made.
IAM ....
........ The era of ‘free air’ at garages appears to be ending. However, charging for air does seem to be improving pressure gauge accuracy. The lAM Trust survey shows more than 80 per cent of air lines to be accurate within 5 per cent or 2psi, a significant improvement on the 2005 check, which found 50 per cent of gauges to be inaccurate. The new survey also shows that 71 per cent of drivers would be willing swap pounds sterling for pounds per square inch, to ensure accuracy and well-maintained air lines.
Most motorists feel that 20p or 50p is a reasonable price to pay for reliable, accurate and clean airlines at a garage. However, if the price were to be £1, just one in eight men would be prepared to pay but almost a third of women think it a reasonable charge.....

You're quite correct, maybe the one man garages just provided it to maintain good customer relations. The big boys are now only interested in profit.
Air is an expensive commodity though, we knock our compressors off over the week end due to the amount of leaks in the system ....... it apparently saves them quite a bit :-\
-
Just for the record, it was the big petrol retailers who started charging first, certainly around here
-
After reading all this stuff Im now feeling really sorry for Tescos etc. Im now going to stop at their airlines everytime I see one and feed a few pound coins in the slot to help them out a bit. :D ;D

Absolutely, and then the smaller ones followed suit. :y

Once again, your rose tinted specs are deceiving you Mr Albitz.
It was the independents who started charging. The Supermarkets only started charging relatively recently.
Air itself is free, but the machines needed are bloody expensive, and frequently damaged/destroyed. Somebody has to pay for that. Would you rather they put up the cost of fuel to cover it? Thought not ;)

Yep... Supermarkets were last around here was what I meant ;)

Round this way it was the other way round. As I said,my heart bleeds for Tescos etc. I didnt realise just how hard up they were. ::)
They can charge what they like for their fuel.My Cavalier never sees a fuel station and my omega is filled up at a workshop/LPG installer who doesnt have a forecourt never mind an airline. ;) ;D
-

But then look at it the other way... Why should they provide equipment that costs them a considerable amount of money for free?
At least with Tesco you get screenwash as well ;)
-
I didnt know about the screenwash until someone mentioned it in this thread, but I bought 5 litres of it on special offer at Tescos last week for 75p iirc.
Personally I detest Tescos and their like and would love nothing more than to see them disappear. We shop there for some things due to the fact that they have distorted the retail market, and left most high streets empty by driving traditional shopkeepers out of business. Swmbo always takes pleasure though in reducing the amount shown on the till display by a considerable amount,by using a bit of intelligence and cunning. ;)

One of their pumps buzzing away for a couple of minutes each day probably pays for it. ;)
It would be nice if we went back to the days when the occasional motoring need was provided for as a thank you for spending a small fortune filling up, IMHO.
It would also be nice not to have to wait for someone to do their weekly shop before doing so.
Maybe they make their money by selling all the rubber that collects on their forecourts? ;)
-
Yes, we know when you dislike something Albitz.
The fact remains, for us motorists, Tesco et al have kept costs down for us. Screenwash is a damn sight more expensive than 75p at my local, retarded autoparts shop. And petrol is a damn sight more expensive at my local retarded BP.

Trouble is, they have to sell other shite to make money, as most of that money we hand over for fuel goes to the government (and it matter not who is in power, be it Tory, Labour (new or old), Sribdems, UKIP, Raving Looneys (actually, hard to tell those last 2 apart sometimes), BNP, whatever)
-
That 75p screenwash was, I assume, 1L?
If you fill the 6.8L(?) washer bottle then you need to use all of that and more during the winter, especially as it's probably the cheap crap that gels anyway, so it makes the 50p for doing tyre pressures and filling the screen wash seem like a bit of a bargain ;)
-

I seriously doubt it.I would have been banned years ago if I really spoke my mind on here. ::)
Tescos drive small competitors out of business and then control prices, whether its food, petrol or anything else they sell.Dont kid yourself that they are doing anyone any favours. If they thought the market would stand the price of petrol being doubled tomorrow they would do it. They keep the price just below what would be viablefor smaller competitors to sell it cheaper than they do. ;)

Nope it was 5L and I bought 4 of them. they were reduced and displayed at the front door,as a loss leader possibly ?
If my washers get blocked by crap I will just spend a few minutes putting one of my spare sets on. :y :D

Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose, Sainsburys, the small independent butcher, the local baker, the fruit and veg guy on the market are all doing it to make money. They will all charge what they think the market will take. NONE of them are here to do any favours, they are all here to put as much bread on their families tables as possible.
Accept it, get over it, move on :)

But the local butcher, baker, candlestick maker havent ruined the landscape of the country by appealling to the lowest common denominator and turned all the trads into shopping junkies who clog up the outskirts of every town at weekends & bank holidays by gathering like disciples at the huge shopping centres they have built.
Btw,your starting to contradict yourself now. ::)

I give up, the title of this thread is so apt ::)

and 50 years ago (the era you appear to espouse) I could NOT buy grapes in January, strawberries in December, fresh lychees, 40 different cheeses, 30 different varities of fish etc etc ... if I was lucky the fishmonger "might" have 4 varities, the greengrocer would have "in season" veg and nowhere sold anything but the most popular cheeses.
Hate the supermarkets if you wish, but the large choices, extreme freshness, and CONVENIENCE of it all being under one roof will ensure that they continue to be the places that sell the most. If they were not a success they would not exist .. simple economics.

So it's OK to buy something from Tesco that may or may not be a loss leader and that your local independent car parts place couldn't compete on price wise? ::)
Anyway, even so... At 75p you still need to use at least half of that bottle during winter so the 50p still isn't that expensive. I can confirm that the screen wash from those machines is actually mixed quite strong :y
-
Nope.I normally use fairy liquid. ;) :D

Nope.Local village High st 15 years ago. ;)
You might be able to buy strawberries in December etc. but they tast vile. We buy as much produce from local farm shops etc as is reasonably feasible, mostly due to the fact that the food actually tastes like food should. A joint of beef from a supermarket invariably looks nice in the shop, but has the taste and texture of an old bicycle tyre when your attempting to eat it.
Its all about the quantity and rarely about the quality with supermarkets ime.
-
Best stuff i've found is the stuff that Lidl sells :y
Works out at about a quid a ltr and it never froze 2 years ago when we had minus 7 on a regular basis for a month ;)

Like 'em or love 'em Tesco are a Great British success!! :y .......and no-one gets dragged there in chains..... ::)
Wonder what happened to the cock in the Audi?? ;D

After this thread, I'm never paying for anything anymore. Quite clearly if I do pay for anything, I'm getting shafted.
No wonder these Supermarkets make Billions per second....... 50p for the convenience of topping up all four tyres on an accurate machine.... Whatever next?

i can remember when air was free . ;D ;D got my own pump so wont use one :y

I beg to differ there......veg that is sourced from abroad, can have taken weeks before it appears on the supermarket shelves.....but yes it is convenient or could that be lazy :-\ ;)

Yep, and it'll have been force grown, picked before it's ripe and stuck under lights to make it look edible. A couple of days in the fridge once you get it home and it's limp and manky.
We've recently started getting veggies delivered in boxes from a local farm and the difference in flavour and shelf life is quite incredible.
-
I am firmly with Albitz on the subject of supermarkets, we use local shops where ever possible certainly the Baker, Butcher and Greengrocer, you know the people and they sell good produce. Farmers markets are another source of great produce, knowing the chap that bred the beast and knowing that they had a good life is important and you can tell the quality in the taste. Supermarkets are used for the non food purchases like detergents, etc the stuff you used to get from a local shop before the big conglomerates took over and forced the local shop out of business. To be honest our biggest expenditure at supermarkets is the two P's ( Petrol and Peroni ::))
Knowing your local shop keeper is important, your custom is important to him, things not in stock will be obtained for you it is called service.
To get back on topic, I buy my tyres from a small fitter down the road he checks the pressures regularly for free, you don't get that at Tesco :y :y
-
Just to chuck in my 50p worth !
The Sainsburys here in Wrexham ,the air and water (no added screen wash) is still free!
But invariably you have to wait a few minutes to use it , also seems to be accurate most times.
We also have a dislike of most supermarkets, very rarely use tesco, the local school runs a food co-op where each week you can collect a bag of veg(in season) or a bag of fruit all sourced locally, all non profit(except for the supplier obviously) and the kids get to sort all the bags out so get hands on with all the different types of fruit and veg. Some kids these days have no perception as to where food actually comes from!
-
Maybe it's a Sainsburys thing then, free air and water here too, reasonable fuel prices and nectar points. Asda has the cheapest fuel in town, Tesco is the dearest supermarket for fuel and charges for air, and Morrisons is in between on price but has a good reward scheme.
