I'm an Outlook man myself, but I have just downloaded the latest version (16.0.2) of Thunderbird from the official link provided by Mozilla, installed it, and can categorically say that there is no evidence whatsoever on my system of any type of software "drive by" installation present.

If you donwload software from any dodgy links, you are asking for trouble.  Always use the official link from the developers :y

As an aside, Windows 7 does not have it's own email client, like Outlook Express was included with XP. So there are lots of people out there looking for clients like Thunderbird, so more dodgy sites that seem to have them but don't, they just con you into downloading crap.

i normally do, but unfortunately it would appear that on this occasion i didn't download from mozilla direct but from a third party site, and i've now got to sort the mess out ! i needed a seperate email account for work reasons and having used firefox for many years thought i'd try thunderbird, now at my cost. bless the trojan writers!!!!!

Live Mail is a seperate download from MS - not sure if taking it out of the Windows package was forced, or if they felt they could force users to at least start off with a recent, secure version...

Your mistake was downloading it from some shitty 3rd party. Should have got it here:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/ (https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/)

Whats it go to do with Mozilla if you didn't download it from their site?  Should have used the "official" download site not some arbitary download site.  Sorry no sympathy  ::)

I suggest backup what you need, wipe the PC and start again if you are having issues removing the spyware
