Title: Steering idler...
Post by: HockeyDave55 on 11 November 2012, 12:26:50
Hi folks!

I went on a nice drive yesterday to collect some lovely trim.

On the way back, I noticed a shimmy coming through my steering AND through my seat.
I didn't notice it on the way there or during the week so I though I might've lost a wheel weight or something???

Anyway, I had a look at all the wheel, no sign of a lost weight, but when I got to jack up the front left, I though the wheel was about to fall off!!!

Sure enough, it's the lidler!!!  >:(

I have seen the guide, good work! Looks real easy but, Where do I get one from? EBay? VX??

Make sure that none of the other joints in the steering linkage aren't knackered as well.
I bought the idler(from Allgerman), but on trying to fit it found that the centre-tierod needed replacing as well. It makes much more sense to have all the bits on hand, so you only have to the job once.
There is a guide on here on how to do the job, but the suggested order makes it harder than it needs to be.

If you break the outer tie-rod to the centre-rod balljoints first, you have something to hammer against and get more effect for your effort.
Then break the centre-rod to the steering box joint, using a fork splitter for ease if you're replacing the centre-rod.
Finally, undo the steering idler nut, remove it and the centre-rod as an assembly and fit them firmly into the bin.

Thanks for the replys chaps!
I have had a look and the prices for parts veary wildly!
Is the much, if any difference in quality of these parts?
I would like to replace the complete system but at the prices that All parts are asking, it will have to wait 'til after the new year... :-/

Are the aftermarket ones known to fail?
