Title: Got my first proper electric shock tonight
Post by: Webby the Bear on 11 November 2012, 18:55:14
As above the wife asks me to look at the wiring in the overhead cooker extraction fan thingy.....

so i switch off the power going to it, take it apart and touch the circuit board  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

i'd been careless and switched the wrong switch.... the one i wanted was very high up the wall.

won't be making an ASS out of U and ME again  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

It also depends on the earthing path as 100 to 200mA via the heart can be fatal by stopping it. So take care.

Always make sure something is isolated before you work on it, a good way is to turn it on and then isolate the circuit at the distribution board, except if it is a light, switch two on, on the same circuit, that way if a bulb blows while you are isolating it and you choose the wrong circuit you are not caught out.

My first shock was when I was about 6. When I was walking past a filling station, where a light had been vandalized, and kids being kids, I just had to touch the bare terminals in the lighting socket.  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ I had a few more since then,  :-[ but it is never a pleasant experience.  :(

I was about 11 and was fixing an old stereo, I had the covers off and was using a scewdriver to test for dry joints by tapping each component whilst the power was on, I dropped the screw driver into the stereo and reached to pick it up without thinking. I woke up on the other side of the room.

Sadly, I've been there far too many times.
I tend to learn from my mistakes, especially painful ones, although the relays in my friends auto garage door opener do tingle slightly when you can't find a suitably insulated tool.

Yep , you'll check twice in future and that's no bad thing.......
After seeing so many instances of poor wiring over the years I never rely on a circuit breaker prefering to isolate the MCB or fusebox , sometimes even removing the main fuse too , and yes ,as experience has shown for good cause... ::)

I was 18.. 18 months! Decided to strip down my bedside light. :-[

Didn't learn, though. ::)

I was rather careful earlier in the year, though, when I found myself in a damp tent trying to fix a valve transmitter during a ham radio contest. 3000 Volts DC at the best part of an Amp. Volts matter when you get to that level, believe me. I doubt a shock from that thing would have been survivable. :-X

Still, we won the contest. :D

I had 2 weeks of school for severe burns after "fixing" the xmas tree lights when I was about 6.

Knocked myself out for about 3 minutes after being blown off a step ladder helping dad fix the garage door.

Other than that, just the usual electric shocks you get playing with mains.

Oh, drilled through a customer's ring main when I was at British Telecom.  But wasn't a problem, she had a gas hob she could make the tea with ::)

Garage door issues a common theme, then? Don't tell me. Someone had stolen some metal from it to fix a TD. ;D

..and tea with customers.. :o The BT man always knocks twice. ::)

Makes the old ticker go a bit don't it Webby.   ;D ;D

After a day of power off, power on, power off, power on, I lost my bearings and wired up our boiler running live. I didn't realise until my arm touched a copper pipe and earthed out.  ;D ;D
Wakes you up to the danger doesn't it.  ;D ;D

On a lesser scale, when motorbikes had metal plug caps, you could hit the starter when a mate was holding the plug cap and give them a healthy shock.  ;D ;D

Technically speaking, both are required to kill  ;)

It's not an "off the shelf" part, but the manufacturer may very well sell the switch assembly.

You can probably buy the switches on their own (as it will be them that's failing if anything), but I'm not so sure that suggesting you pick up a soldering iron is a good idea after your tale of woe  ;D

As in your "P.S. de resistance" - you can't have one without the other.

I wouldn't trust most of the guys who graduated with me following 3 years studying electronics to actually pick one up by the right end! ;D

I thought you usually only picked the iron up by the hot end once or twice before learning not to do that again ;D

My first shock was age about 7 - on march out day (ex forces folks will know what I mean - house was spotless, skirting boards cleaned with a toothbrush etc) I decided to wire a three pin plug up to a length of coax aerial cable and an aerial plug. Did a grand job, too, with the aim of electrocuting those damned pigeons that sat on the aerial..

Sadly all I did was cause a large flash, a bang, a zap and a large scorch mark up the wall after the fuse blew..

Then there was the time I grabbed hold of the power switch inside a PC (the old style, physical mains switch) and made the circuit with my left hand. Ommmm buzzzz.

And finally the time I brushed my hand against the strapping on the back of a CRT tube. Ooh, that hurt by far the most.. ;D

Bed side lamps are a common theme, remember looking at mine having removed the bulb, pushed one of the spring contacts down with my finger, was only about 4 or 5 but remember it well!

Had many since, also a few from TV's when I didn't bother to get a mirror for screen setup, snapped the neck off a tube in the process once to!

I was tinkering with an old lawn mower engine. I had it started but then realised that bizarrely there was no kill switch so I decided to lift the ht lead off the spark plug (it was loose). Bloody hell what a shock I got! I thought they're meant to be insulated! I got a surge up my arm and across my chest. Obviously not as bad as the mains but it was quite funny!

I once got a power flex ab toner belt (wasn't mine) put it on my arm and turned it up full. Anyway I couldn't take it off because my arm was swinging all over the place it was hilarious! It hurt as well though!

I well remember playing with one of those in the school physics lab....... We I should not have been there as I was only 2nd year, and the lab was set up for A-Level course work ...... the resultant screams from the young lady ensured the rapid intervention of prefects, a visit to the headmasters office, and the inability to sit down for several hours .......   :)

glad you are ok, but still must have hurt like hell

I remember Phil doing somethinmg like that when working on our chest freezer, and had mistakenly switched off just the sockets, and the kitchen one was wired into the lights ring for some unknown reason

He was thrashing about on the floor unable to let gop of the wire, and I was 8 months pregnant, so all I could do was just throw the master switch
